Identifying fire safety in hospitals: Evidence from Changsha, China

Dingli Liu et al.

Summary: Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, fires have been occurring frequently in hospitals managing COVID-19, resulting in over 279 deaths. This study analyzed the fire probability and fire service coverage for hospitals in China from a national perspective. The annual fire frequency of a hospital building exceeds 0.5 when its floor area reaches approximately 180,000 m2, as calculated using the generalized Barrois model. The average annual fire probability of a hospital in China was found to be 0.017 based on the number of hospital fires in Changsha and the number of hospitals in China from 2014 to 2017. The total effective coverage rate (TECR) of fire service for hospitals in China was estimated to be between 14.18% and 30.89%.

Hospital Fire Outbreaks Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Low- and Middle-Income Settings

Jonathan Bayuo et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate and synthesize published and gray literature on hospital fire outbreaks before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A 2-phase narrative review approach was used, and the results showed an increase in the number of hospital fire incidents during the COVID-19 period. Additional risks/causes such as oxygen explosions, inefficient cooling systems, and lack of fire control measures in makeshift pre-COVID-19 centers were identified during the pandemic. Guidelines, protocols, and policies for preventing hospital fire outbreaks and providing psychosocial support are needed.

Experimental study on the oxygen-enriched biogas explosion characteristics by co-firing propane in a duct

Xi Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the effect of propane co-firing on the explosion characteristics of oxygen-enriched biogas. The results show that increasing the oxygen fraction enhances the explosion strength and accelerates flame propagation. The propane effect is distinguishable during the dynamic evolution of the flame, and its magnitude is influenced by the oxygen enrichment.

Effect of Oxygen Concentration on the Oxidative Thermodynamics and Spontaneous Combustion of Pulverized Coal

Lifeng Ren et al.

Summary: Spontaneous combustion of pulverized coal has been extensively researched using differential scanning calorimetry to investigate exothermic characteristics and combustion risk. Results showed that reducing oxygen concentrations decreases exothermic intensity and increases ignition temperatures. Additionally, lowering oxygen levels effectively reduces both apparent activation energy and spontaneous combustion risk indexes of the coal samples.

Evaluation of CFD simulations of transient pool fire burning rates

James R. Stewart et al.

Summary: This paper evaluated the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) for predictive modeling of liquid pool fire burning rates, showing consistent model performance for fully predictive modeling during quasi-steady burning. However, the model falls short in predicting the subtleties associated with each phase of the transient burning process, failing to reliably predict fuel mass loss rates during fire growth and extinction. The results suggest a range of model modifications for improved prediction of the transient fire growth and extinction phases of burning for liquid pool fires.
