Thermal hazard risk and decomposition mechanism identification of 1-Hexyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium nitrate: Combined thermal analysis experiment and DFT emulation

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the pyrolysis hazard characteristics and mechanism of a new versatile ionic liquid, 1-Hexyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium nitrate ([Hmmim][NO3]). The thermodynamic parameters, safety parameters, and reaction pattern of [Hmmim][NO3] pyrolysis process are obtained. The severity degree and possibility of runaway reaction are evaluated, while the primary noxious gas and reaction steps leading to the thermal hazards of [Hmmim][NO3] are confirmed. This research provides a theoretical basis for improving the intrinsic safety of [Hmmim][NO3] application and formulating corresponding safety preventive measures.

Fire parameters, behaviour, and comparative thermal hazard of food grains based on the cone calorimeter tests

Anene Oguaka et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the fire parameters of agricultural food grains, with a focus on African food grains. The research found that the oil content is the main determinant of the thermal fire hazard level in these grains, which have a higher fire hazard compared to wood pellets.

Smoldering of Storage Rice: Effect of Moldy Degree and Moisture Content

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: The molding degree of rice has a significant impact on its fire risk and hazard, with severely molded rice having higher smoldering temperature and faster propagation rate. Increasing moisture content also leads to higher smoldering temperature and propensity to flame.

A comparative kinetic study between TGA & DSC techniques using model-free and model-based analyses to assess spontaneous combustion propensity of Indian coals

Somu Mandal et al.

Summary: This study conducted a kinetic analysis of coal samples from Indian coalfields using the STA technique to assess their propensity for spontaneous combustion. The results showed that the activation energy values play a significant role in the spontaneous combustion propensity of coal, and the model-based analysis method provided better results compared to the model-free analysis.

Origin and Justification of the Use of the Arrhenius Relation to Represent the Reaction Rate of the Thermal Decomposition of a Solid

Benjamin Batiot et al.

Summary: Degradation models are commonly used to predict the generation of combustible gases during fires, involving various sub-models such as pyrolysis models which require defining decomposition mechanisms and reaction rates. Arrhenius-type equations are often used to quantify reaction rates based on temperature, originally derived from gas-phase reactions. However, the use of Arrhenius-type equations for solid degradation may involve important simplifications that need to be justified, as discussed in this study. Critical analysis of existing thermal degradation models highlights the potential consequences of using Arrhenius-type equations for quantifying solid-phase reaction rates in fire predictions.
