Electrochemical coupling conversion of sulfur-containing gaseous waste to treasure: A key review

Hang Yang et al.

Summary: Sulfur-containing gaseous contaminant treatment plays a crucial role in the healthy and sustainable development of industry. The conventional methods for H2S or SO2 treatment require large amounts of desiccants and energy consumption. However, the electrochemical coupling system offers a promising solution by converting H2S and SO2 into recyclable substances and transferring the contained energy to more valuable products. This review discusses the mechanism and recent studies on electrochemical removal of H2S and SO2, aiming to address the issues of energy waste and resource recovery in pollutants treatment.

High-valent metals in advanced oxidation processes: A critical review of their identification methods, formation mechanisms, and reactivity performance

Bowen Yang et al.

Summary: The role of high-valent metals in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is discussed in this study. The identification methods, formation mechanisms, and reactivity performance of high-valent metals are comprehensively reviewed. Density functional theory calculations show that high-valent metals are more favorable compared to radicals. High-valent metals exhibit strong selectivity towards electrophilic functional groups due to their moderate oxidation performance. The study also proposes points for critical thinking and future prospects for high-valent metal-mediated oxidation processes.

Three-dimensional structured electrode for electrocatalytic organic wastewater purification: Design, mechanism and role

Xuechuan Li et al.

Summary: Considering the growing need for decentralized water treatment, the use of electrocatalytic processes (EP) for organic wastewater purification is expected to dominate in the near future due to its high efficiency, small reactor assembly, and operation flexibility. The catalytic performance of electrode materials plays a crucial role in the development of this technology. In particular, three-dimensional (3D) structure electrodes have shown superior performance compared to two-dimensional (2D) electrodes in terms of mass transfer, adsorption enhancement, and active site exposure. This review provides an introduction, classification, advantages, and disadvantages of 3D electrode materials, followed by a critical discussion on their design and construction for organic wastewater purification applications. The removal mechanism of organic pollutants, the role of 3D structure, reactor design, conversion and toxicity of degradation products, electrode energy efficiency, stability, cost, and current challenges and future perspectives are comprehensively reviewed. This review will provide valuable insights into the design and application of 3D electrodes in environmental water purification.

Nitrogen-containing wastewater fuel cells for total nitrogen removal and energy recovery based on Cl•/ClO• oxidation of ammonia nitrogen

Panyu Jiang et al.

Summary: The excessive discharge of nitrogen into water bodies has caused extensive water pollution and risks to human health, making it a critical global issue. To address this, the treatment of nitrogen-containing wastewater for nitrogen removal and energy recovery is of great significance. Biological methods and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are the main methods for nitrogen removal, but they have limitations. AOPs, especially the use of chlorine radicals (Cl center dot/ClO center dot), show promise in efficiently removing NH3-N/NH4+-N with high N-2 selectivity.

Simultaneous nanocatalytic surface activation of pollutants and oxidants for highly efficient water decontamination

Ying-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Removal of organic micropollutants from water through advanced oxidation processes is hindered by excessive energy and/or chemical input, as well as the generation of large amounts of residuals.
