Size and passivation effects in the torsion of thin metallic wires

Yuyang Xie et al.

Summary: Torsion tests were performed on microscale copper wires with diameters ranging from 25 to 50 μm, with and without passivation layers, to investigate the size and passivation effects. The experiments showed an increase in yield strength and flow stress due to diameter reduction and the presence of passivation layers. Passivated wires exhibited stronger size effects compared to unpassivated wires, with the torque increasing significantly with diameter decrease. The theoretical predictions based on the Fleck-Hutchinson strain gradient plasticity theory matched well with the experimental observations, elucidating the physical mechanism of passivation layers affecting the torsional deformation of wires.

Plastic buckling of columns at the micron scale

Kim L. Nielsen et al.

Summary: This paper examines the compressed wide metal columns with length to thickness ratios that undergo plastic buckling. Various strain gradient plasticity theories are used to analyze the columns. The findings suggest that one class of strain gradient theories is inadequate for predicting plastic buckling.

Architectural Design and Additive Manufacturing of Mechanical Metamaterials: A Review

Chenxi Lu et al.

Summary: Mechanical metamaterials are architected materials that exhibit exceptional mechanical properties achieved through designed artificial structures. Recent advancements in additive manufacturing have enabled the rapid development of novel metamaterial concepts and reduced the design and validation cycle. This paper provides a detailed review of various topologies based on desired mechanical properties and discusses the manufacturing technologies and future directions for mechanical metamaterials.

Comparing Xe+pFIB and Ga+FIB for TEM sample preparation of Al alloys: Minimising FIB-induced artefacts

Xiangli Zhong et al.

Summary: The dual beam Xe+ plasma focused ion beam (Xe(+)pFIB) instrument has shown potential benefits over conventional Ga+FIB for site-specific TEM sample preparation. The study demonstrates that Xe(+)pFIB milling produces improved STEM/TEM samples compared to Ga+ milling, making it the preferred specimen preparation route. Strategies for minimizing FIB-induced artefacts are also proposed.

Deviation of mechanical behavior in microforming from continuum scaling: A geometrically necessary dislocation storage perspective

Bin Zhang et al.

Summary: Metal forming at the meso- and micro-scale can be affected by the grain size of the material, leading to deviations from conventional plasticity. Larger grain sizes in copper require higher pressures for extrusion in axisymmetric reverse extrusion and result in less flow into micron-sized gaps in double-punch molding compared to smaller grain sizes. Crystallographic orientation data suggests that larger grain sizes store more dislocations during deformation, influencing the mechanical behavior.
