Process parameters effect on environmental sustainability of composites FFF technology

Iacopo Bianchi et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the effect of process parameters on the environmental sustainability of 3D printing of short fiber-reinforced polymer composites. Two 3D printable composite materials, glass fiber-reinforced (GlassPA) and carbon fiber-reinforced (CarbonPA) polyamide, were analyzed using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology to evaluate their environmental behavior and mechanical properties. Experimental tests showed that CarbonPA exhibited higher mechanical performances than GlassPA, making it the more environmentally friendly alternative in tensile loads applications.

The Direct 3D Printing of Functional PEEK/Hydroxyapatite Composites via a Fused Filament Fabrication Approach

Krzysztof Rodzen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the direct 3D printing of extruded PEEK/HA composite filaments using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technology, achieving uniform distribution of HA particles and high crystallinity. The mechanical properties of the printed samples are comparable to human femoral cortical bone, showing the feasibility of 3D printing PEEK/HA composites with up to 30wt% HA.

Summary: The study demonstrates the direct 3D printing of PEEK/HA composites, with bioactive HA incorporated in the surface to support the adherence and growth of osteoblast-like cells. Modification of PEEK with bioactive agents such as hydroxyapatite can improve the biocompatibility and osteoconductivity of the composite materials.
