Upper Pliocene bivalve shell concentrations from the Lower Chelif basin (NW Algeria): Systematics, sedimentologic and taphonomic framework

Madani Benyoucef et al.

Summary: The sedimentologic and palaeontological investigation of the Upper Pliocene Slama Formation in the Lower Chelif Basin in NW Algeria led to the collection of important bivalve assemblages for taxonomic and taphonomic purposes. The study revealed a comprehensive inventory list of 30 species of Upper Pliocene bivalves, with 17 of them being extinct. The analysis of taphonomic attributes and sedimentary structures suggested that the deposits likely originated from discontinuous processes of winnowing and bypassing of sediments, possibly due to the action of storms in shallow waters.

Shallow to marginal marine ichnoassemblages from the Upper Pliocene Slama Formation (Lower Chelif Basin, NW Algeria)

Mohamed Bendella et al.

Summary: The Slama Formation in Algeria consists of siliciclastic deposits with 16 ichnotaxa distributed in five stratigraphic members, representing different beach and foreshore environments. These trace fossils reflect the sedimentation and relative sea level changes during the late Upper Pliocene eustatic cycle.
