Fibre-reinforced biocompatible hydrogel to replace single-use plastic tubing in the clinical setting

J. MacKenzie et al.

Summary: Through examining the manufacturing process and methodology for producing hydrogel tubing, this work successfully developed hydrogel tubing for extracorporeal applications. The addition of cellulose fiber reinforced the tubing, making it strong enough to circulate human blood and reduce platelet adhesion.

An in vitro model of fibrosis using crosslinked native extracellular matrix-derived hydrogels to modulate biomechanics without changing composition

Mehmet Nizamoglu et al.

Summary: In fibrotic lung diseases, the composition and structure of the extracellular matrix (ECM) are altered, leading to changes in cellular behavior. This study developed an in vitro model to mimic the altered mechanics of a fibrotic microenvironment. The results showed that crosslinking the ECM-derived hydrogels changed their biomechanical properties and fiber organization, which influenced the differentiation and morphology of fibroblasts.

Diagnostic approach for coronary microvascular dysfunction in patients with chest pain and no obstructive coronary artery disease.

Gaetano Antonio Lanza et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown that abnormalities in coronary microcirculation may be the cause of acute and chronic cardiac ischemic syndromes. The microvascular origin of myocardial ischemia and angina is considered in clinical practice when patients have normal or near-normal coronary arteries during angiography. This article reviews the diagnostic approach for patients suspected of having coronary microvascular dysfunction as the cause of ischemic syndromes and proposes a classification for chronic and acute microvascular coronary ischemic syndrome, including myocardial infarction with normal coronary arteries.

A High performance electronic nose system for the recognition of myocardial infarction and coronary artery diseases

Bilge Han Tozlu et al.

Summary: Electronic noses are devices that can detect the presence of chemicals in odors through gas sensors. Research shows that using an electronic nose to analyze exhaled breath can accurately diagnose myocardial infarction and stable coronary artery disease.

Phosphate as a Pathogen of Arteriosclerosis and Aging

Makoto Kuro-o

Summary: Terrestrial vertebrates have evolved strong bones made of calcium-phosphate, with an endocrine system regulating phosphate concentration to maintain bone health. Phosphate precipitation can induce cell damage and inflammation. Calcium-phosphate particles in the blood, known as calciprotein particles (CPPs), may contribute to aging by correlating with vascular stiffness and inflammation.

Cardiovascular Disease in Chronic Kidney Disease Pathophysiological Insights and Therapeutic Options

Joachim Jankowski et al.

Summary: Patients with chronic kidney disease face an increased risk of cardiovascular events, with advanced CKD stages significantly elevating the risk. Cardiovascular events, rather than end-stage kidney disease, are the leading cause of death in this high-risk population, and CKD causes a proinflammatory state that affects the cardiovascular system.

Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction Across the Spectrum of Cardiovascular Diseases JACC State-of-the-Art Review

Marco Giuseppe Del Buono et al.

Summary: CMD encompasses multiple pathogenetic mechanisms involving coronary micro-circulation and plays a major role in myocardial ischemia in patients with angina without obstructive coronary artery disease, as well as in various other cardiovascular conditions. Despite the lack of specific treatment, further research is needed to provide personalized therapies for this diverse group of patients.
