Longitudinal effects of physical and social neighbourhood change on suicide mortality: A full population cohort study among movers and non-movers in the Netherlands

Paulien Hagedoorn et al.

Summary: This study found associations between the residential neighbourhood environment and suicide mortality. Movers had a lower risk of suicide compared to non movers. Improvements in social fragmentation and deprivation reduced suicide risk, while change from rural to urban conditions lowered suicide risk. However, increased green space put people at higher risk of suicide. Urban areas had lower suicide mortality for both men and women, and lower social fragmentation reduced suicide risk for women. Stable exposure to high levels of green space increased suicide risk for women. Associations between neighbourhood change and suicide were more pronounced in non-movers.

The effects of neighbourhood social cohesion on preventing depression and anxiety among adolescents and young adults: rapid review

Josefien J. F. Breedvelt et al.

Neighborhood social context and suicide mortality: A multilevel register-based 5-year follow-up study of 2.7 million individuals

Andreas Lindegaard Jakobsen et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that there is a correlation between neighborhood social characteristics and suicide mortality. However, the operational definition of neighborhoods and the overall importance of neighborhood context in relation to suicide mortality have not been given enough attention. This study used an automated redistricting algorithm to delineate micro-areas as neighborhoods and examined their effects on suicide mortality. The results revealed that neighborhoods have a significant impact on suicide mortality, especially for individuals aged 20-39 years.

Associations between social fragmentation, socioeconomic deprivation and suicide risk across 1887 municipalities in Japan, 2009-2017: a spatial analysis using the Bayesian hierarchical model

Eiji Yoshioka et al.

Summary: This study investigates the associations between socioeconomic characteristics and suicide mortality rates in 1887 municipalities in Japan from 2009 to 2017. The findings suggest that higher levels of socioeconomic deprivation and lower levels of urbanicity are associated with higher suicide rates. The associations vary by gender and age, with young Japanese people in the most fragmented municipalities being at particularly high risk of suicide.

Deaths of Despair: A Scoping Review on the Social Determinants of Drug Overdose, Alcohol-Related Liver Disease and Suicide

Elisabet Beseran et al.

Summary: There is a lack of consensus on the social determinants of Deaths of Despair (DoD), which refers to an increase in mortality attributed to drug overdose, alcohol-related liver disease, and suicide in the United States (USA) during recent years. This study aimed to review the scientific literature on DoD and identify relevant social determinants and inequalities related to these mortality trends. The findings indicate a progressive increase in deaths attributable to suicide, drug overdose, and alcohol-related liver disease in the USA in the last two decades. Low socioeconomic position and education levels, as well as working in jobs with high insecurity and living in rural areas, were identified as the most relevant social determinants of DoD. Further research on the structural and intermediate social determinants of DoD and social mechanisms is needed.

Risk factors for suicide in adults: systematic review and meta-analysis of psychological autopsy studies

Louis Favril et al.

Summary: Effective prevention of suicide requires a comprehensive understanding of risk factors. Clinical factors, such as mental disorders and a history of self-harm, have the strongest associations with suicide. On the other hand, factors related to sociodemographic status, family history, and adverse life events have smaller effects.
