A high-order stabilized solver for the volume averaged Navier-Stokes equations

Toni El Geitani et al.

Summary: The volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used with tailored stabilization techniques to study fluid flow in the presence of solids. A high-order finite element solver is developed using both forms A and B of these equations. The solver is verified and shown to preserve the convergence order of the finite element discretization. Gas flow through a randomly packed bed is simulated to validate the model.

A new correlation for the coefficient of restitution of particles with low mechanical resistance for modeling wastewater treatment biofilm reactors

Karla R. B. Melo et al.

Summary: Fluidized bed bioreactors are commonly used in wastewater treatment, employing gel beads or hard particles covered in a biofilm layer. The energy loss due to particle deformation during collisions can lead to issues in reactor design and operation. A study investigated the coefficient of restitution of alginate particles, determining it is directly proportional to the particle Young's modulus and inversely proportional to impact velocity. A correlation was proposed to estimate the coefficient of restitution, providing a potential tool for simulating flow dynamics in fluidized bed bioreactors.

Implementation, validation and application of a lubrication force model in CFD-DEM simulations

Joao P. F. Campos et al.

Summary: This study used numerical simulations to evaluate the effects of collision and lubrication forces on the dynamics of solid-liquid fluidized beds, implementing a lubrication force model in the open-source software CFDEM project. Results showed that the lubrication force significantly impacted bed dynamics, influencing void fractions, porosity, and particle velocities.

Effect of particle size and shape on liquid-solid fluidization in a HydroFloat cell

Md Tariqul Islam et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of particle size and shape on liquid-solid fluidization in a HydroFloat cell using CFD results and experimental data. The modeling approach successfully predicted and validated factors affecting bed expansion, pressure drop, and voidage, leading to improvements in prediction accuracy. These findings are valuable for optimizing the operation of the HydroFloat cell.
