Optimization of cemented paste backfill with carbon nanotubes as a sustainable treatment for lead-containing tailings

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: Pb(II)-containing tailings pose significant environmental hazards, and their rational and harmless treatment is crucial for the development of green mining. Cemented paste backfill (CPB) plays a vital role in large-scale tailings disposal. However, the presence of Pb(II) in tailings hinders the hydration reaction of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), leading to reduced early strength of CPB and hampering mining operations. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used to optimize the properties of CPB, leading to accelerated OPC hydration and the formation of a more compact CPB structure. This resulted in improved early strength of CPB and enhanced immobilization of Pb(II).

Effect of Content and Length of Polypropylene Fibers on Strength and Microstructure of Cementitious Tailings-Waste Rock Fill

Bo Gao et al.

Summary: Polypropylene fiber significantly affects the strength and microstructure of cemented tailings backfill. Experimental results show that the compressive strength of fiber-reinforced cemented tailings backfill (FRCTWRF) reaches its highest value of 0.93 MPa at 6 mm fiber length and 0.6 wt.% fiber content. The peak strain of FRCTWRF is highest at 2.88% with 12 mm fiber length and 0.3 wt.% fiber content. Increasing fiber length reduces fracture volume and enhances crack resistance of FRCTWRF.

Exploring the link between ultrasonic and strength behavior of cementitious mine backfill by considering pore structure

Muhammet Sari et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the strength development and pore structure changes of cementitious mine backfill (CMB) using ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) technique. The influence of different types of pyritic tailings on the quality of filling specimens was investigated. The results showed that the total porosity of CMBs decreased with increasing age and binder ratio. The acidic nature of low pH tailings negatively affected the aged strength of CMBs, but these negative effects decreased with slag substitution and high binder dosages. Excellent correlation curves were found between UPV and UCS.

Long-term ageing characteristics of cemented paste backfill: Usability of sand as a partial substitute of hazardous tailings

Muhammet Sari et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the long-term filling performance of cemented paste backfill (CPB) and reduce cement-related costs and environmental risks by partially substituting tailings with sand. The experimental results showed that using sand as a substitute for tailings in CPB can increase its strength and improve its structure. Additionally, sand contributes to the hydration reactions of cement and prevents acid/leach formations that may occur in the long-term ageing. Overall, the use of sand enhances the performance of CPB and reduces the environmental impacts of tailings.

Cementitious Backfill with Partial Replacement of Cu-Rich Mine Tailings by Sand: Rheological, Mechanical and Microstructural Properties

Nihat Utku Guner et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the strength performance of cementitious paste backfill (CPB) by improving its gradation, while reducing costs and the amount of binder used per unit volume. Experimental investigation showed that adding sand significantly increased the strength of CPB (up to 99%), but the replacement rate of sand was limited to 30% due to its segregation effect. Microstructural tests revealed that the void volume of CPB decreased as the amount of added sand increased. Therefore, it was concluded that calcareous sand made a major contribution to filling strength by improving gradation adjustment and reducing the amount of cement used in CPB manufacturing.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the strength behavior of cementitious tailings backfill (CTB). The results show that CNTs significantly improve the strength and microstructure of CTB by inhibiting crack expansion and enhancing material integrity. Mechanical properties, crack evolution and damage characteristics of prefabricated fractured cemented paste backfill under uniaxial compression

Summary: In this study, the mechanical behavior, crack propagation law, and damage evolution characteristics of prefabricated fractured cemented paste backfill (CPB or FCPB) with different dip angles were investigated using uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. The existence of fractures significantly affected the properties of the backfill, with the increase in dip angle leading to changes in strength and elastic modulus. The presence of fractures facilitated crack propagation and macro failure. A damage constitutive model considering initial damage was established to describe the stress-strain behavior of the backfill. The findings provide a theoretical foundation for analyzing the stability of backfill with geological defects.

Physico-chemical and micro-structural behavior of cemented mine backfill: Effect of pH in dam tailings

Summary: The management of tailings created during ore processing is a challenging task for mining companies and the environment. This study focuses on the usability of dam tailings in cemented mine/paste backfill (CMB/CPB), considering the physico-chemical and micro-structural aspects. The results show that the strength of backfill can be improved by increasing basicity/age, but backfills made with sulfide-rich tailings may experience a decrease in strength. Additionally, the pH values detected by chemical tests can increase or decrease over time due to acid formations and erosions, which play a key role in the deterioration of CPB physically, chemically, and microstructurally.

Prediction of the Mechanical Performance of Cemented Tailings Backfill Using Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Measurement

Summary: This paper investigates the prediction of the mechanical performance of cemented tailings backfill (CTB) using the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) method. CTB samples with different binder-to-water ratios and solid content were monitored by UPV during the curing process. The results show a positive correlation between UPV and curing age, binder-to-water ratio, and solid content. Empirical equations for predicting the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of CTB using UPV were developed and validated. The main finding is that the UPV monitoring method is effective for predicting the mechanical properties of CTB and is non-destructive and efficient.
