A detailed gas-solid fluidized bed comparison study on CFD-DEM coarse-graining techniques

M. J. A. de Munck et al.

Summary: Computational Fluid Dynamics-Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) is a numerical tool used for detailed fluidized bed studies. To overcome its computational expense, coarse-graining techniques have been developed. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of different coarse-graining scaling laws in characterizing the original system. We also demonstrated the usefulness of a continuous two-way smoothing function in achieving grid-independent solutions in CFD-DEM simulations.

Geometric similarity on interparticle force evaluation for scaled-up DEM particles

Yuze Hu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method based on geometric similarity to evaluate the original particle overlap and separation distance in scaled-up particles. The experimental results demonstrate that this method can provide almost identical stress-strain curve between the original and scaled-up particles, and reasonably replicate the original velocity distributions of cohesive particles with liquid bridge and JKR surface adhesion forces.

Coarse-grained CFD-DEM study of Gas-solid flow in gas cyclone

Kaiwei Chu et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical investigation of gas-solid flow in a gas cyclone using a coarse-grained combined Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The results demonstrate that the model captures the typical flow features in a gas cyclone and highlights the importance of including the van der Waals force for accurate separation efficiency prediction.

Comparison of particle-resolved DNS (PR-DNS) and non-resolved DEM/CFD simulations of flow through homogenous ensembles of fixed spherical and non-spherical particles

B. Kravets et al.

Summary: In this study, particle-unresolved simulations were compared to direct numerical simulations using the Lattice-Boltzmann method. By eliminating particle motion, the accuracy of CFD can be examined in detail at the particle scale. The influence of particle shape on numerical accuracy of non-resolved DEM/CFD was studied, particularly focusing on non-spherical particles.

A novel stiffness scaling methodology for discrete element modelling of cohesive fine powders

Yi He et al.

Summary: (English Summary:) The study highlights the importance of considering sliding and rolling resistances as well as non-contact cohesive interaction when modelling cohesive fine powders, presenting a new stiffness scaling methodology that significantly improves the accuracy of simulations. The new approach preserves particle behavior and packing structure details even when stiffness is scaled down by orders of magnitude, demonstrating its applicability in various contact-dominated systems.

Coarse-Grain DEM Modelling in Fluidized Bed Simulation: A Review

Alberto Di Renzo et al.

Summary: In the past decade, the application of CFD-DEM for fluidized beds has expanded from small, lab-scale units to larger scale systems, benefiting greatly from coarse graining methods. By introducing coarse graining procedures based on different physical backgrounds, the number of particles that can be simulated has increased, covering pilot-scale and industrially relevant systems. The review discusses scaling for contact forces, hydrodynamic forces, and cohesive forces, quantifying computational savings in terms of coarse graining degree and presenting recent applications and future directions in the field.
