The opportunistic nature of gut commensal microbiota

Priyankar Dey et al.

Summary: The abundance of gut commensals has been associated with health-promoting effects, but the definition of good or bad microbiota depends on specific conditions. The interaction between host-microbiota and microbe-microbe determines the beneficial or pathogenic nature of microbiota. Emerging evidence suggests that gut bacteria, which are commonly considered beneficial, can promote opportunistic infections. This review summarizes the concepts behind the occasional transformation from commensal to pathogenic state of gut bacteria. It discusses relevant clinical and experimental studies on commensal overgrowth and bacteraemia. Three key processes and their underlying mechanisms responsible for the opportunistic nature of commensals are summarized, including improved colonisation fitness, pathoadaptive mutations, and evasion of host immune response. Overall, this review provides an updated concept summary on the underlying mechanisms of disease causative events driven by gut commensal bacteria.

Microbial short-chain fatty acids: a bridge between dietary fibers and poultry gut health - A review

Qasim Ali et al.

Summary: Maintaining poultry gut health relies on the balance between diet, commensal microbiota, and the mucosa. Antibiotics disrupt the gut microbiota, while dietary fibers can counterbalance it. The production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) by microbiota has significant effects on poultry health.

Methodologies for energy evaluation of pig and poultry feeds: A review

Jean Noblet et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the methods for evaluating the energy content of feed for monogastric animals, with a focus on net energy (NE). Energy digestibility in pigs and poultry depends on feed characteristics, technology, and animal factors. The concept of adjusted metabolisable energy (ME) and true ME (TME) were developed for poultry. Evaluating dietary NE is more complex and depends on various factors. Standardised NE values can be used to calculate NE prediction equations for ingredients and compound feeds.

Non-digestible galactomannan oligosaccharides from Cassia seed gum modulate microbiota composition and metabolites of human fecal inoculum

Miao Miao et al.

Summary: The study examined the digestibility and prebiotic potential of galactomannan oligosaccharides prepared from Cassia seed gum (CMOS). CMOS showed tolerance against simulated gastrointestinal digestion and promoted the growth of beneficial bacteria while inhibiting harmful bacteria during in vitro human fecal fermentation. Short chain fatty acids, specifically acetic acid and propionic acid, were the predominant metabolites. Enzymatic hydrolysis played a key role in the utilization of CMOS with DP = 3 and 4.
