Comparison between two cultivars of longan fruit cv. `Dongbi' and `Fuyan' in the metabolisms of lipid and energy and its relation to pulp breakdown

Yifen Lin et al.

Summary: This study examined the differences in pulp breakdown between two longan cultivars, "Dongbi" and "Fuyan", focusing on lipid and energy metabolisms. The results showed that compared to "Fuyan" longan, "Dongbi" longan had higher energy levels, unsaturation degree of fatty acids, and contents of phospholipids, ATP, and ADP. Additionally, "Dongbi" longan exhibited lower levels of saturated fatty acids, peroxidized fatty acids, and lipase activity, as well as better ATPase activity, lower pulp breakdown index, and improved pulp appearance. These findings suggest that the mitigated pulp breakdown in "Dongbi" longan is attributed to the coordinated metabolisms in lipid and energy, which maintain higher energy levels, higher unsaturation degree of fatty acids, delay phospholipid degradation, and preserve the structural integrity of microsomes and entire cells.

Epibrassinolide enhanced chilling tolerance of postharvest banana fruit by regulating energy status and pyridine nucleotide homeostasis

Dong Li et al.

Summary: Exogenous epibrassinolide can regulate the chilling tolerance of banana fruit by maintaining total chlorophyll and reducing browning index, electrolyte leakage, and MDA. This study also found that epibrassinolide can increase fruit's energy charge and alleviate chilling injury by inhibiting H2O2 accumulation and O-2(.)- production.

Exogenous melatonin maintains quality of postharvest Rosa roxburghii fruit by modulating reactive oxygen species metabolism and energy status

Boyu Dong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of exogenous melatonin on the quality, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and energy metabolism of Rosa roxburghii fruit. The results showed that melatonin delayed the decay incidence, weight loss, and malondialdehyde content, while maintaining fruit firmness, total soluble solids, and titratable acid. Melatonin also enhanced the activity of enzymes involved in ROS metabolism and improved energy metabolism in the fruit. The expression levels of genes related to L-ascorbic acid biosynthesis and recycling were up-regulated in melatonin-treated fruit. Overall, melatonin played a protective role in maintaining the quality of Rosa roxburghii fruit.

Moderation of respiratory cascades and energy metabolism of fresh-cut pear fruit in response to high CO2 controlled atmosphere

Di Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of 10% CO2 on the respiration pathway and energy metabolism of fresh-cut pears, finding that under 10% CO2, the total respiratory rate was moderated and the energy charge was 1.6 times higher than in the control group. Enzymes involved in energy metabolism were affected, leading to preservation effects on fresh-cut pear fruit such as inhibition of senescence, decrease of energy status, and promotion of stress resistance.
