H2O2, NO, and H2S networks during root development and signalling under physiological and challenging environments: Beneficial or toxic?

Soumya Mukherjee et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays a crucial role in modulating root development and architecture under both normal and adverse environmental conditions. Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) also have diverse functions in plant development and signaling. Depending on the dosage and application mode, NO and H2S can synergistically or antagonistically mediate H2O2 signaling during root development, thus enhancing tolerance to oxidative stress. This assessment provides a comprehensive update on the cooperative roles of NO and H2S in modulating H2O2 homeostasis during root development, abiotic stress tolerance, and root-microbe interaction.

Hydrogen sulfide-induced chilling resistance in peach fruit is performed via sustaining the homeostasis of ROS and RNS

Yaqin Zhao et al.

Summary: The effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) application on endogenous H2S, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in cold-stored peach fruit were studied. The application of 20 mu L L 1 H2S efficiently prevented quality deterioration caused by chilling injury, promoting endogenous H2S production and enhancing antioxidant systems and ROS generation. H2S also increased nitric oxide (NO) levels while suppressing peroxynitrite anion content, improving the CI of peach fruit.

Recent advances and mechanistic interactions of hydrogen sulfide with plant growth regulators in relation to abiotic stress tolerance in plants

Bisma Hilal et al.

Summary: Adverse environmental factors such as drought, heat, cold, salinity, and heavy metal toxicity pose major threats to global food security as they negatively impact crop yield and quality. Recent studies have shown that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), known as a gasotransmitter in animals, also plays a significant role in plant growth and development. H2S acts as a signaling molecule involved in various plant processes, including the regulation of stomatal movement, seed germination, photosynthesis, and plant adaptation to stress. It has been found that H2S can enhance plant resilience against environmental constraints by mitigating toxic effects and damage caused by stressful conditions. This study aims to explore the biosynthetic pathways of H2S, its physiological functions in plants, as well as its interaction with plant growth regulators.

Biotechnological interventions in reducing losses of tropical fruits and vegetables

Mohammad Irfan et al.

Summary: Tropical fruits and vegetables are diverse in structure, features, and physiology, containing bioactive ingredients attractive to customers. However, significant losses at pre- and postharvest levels limit their use. Traditional breeding strategies have limitations, but recent biotechnological approaches address losses and enhance crop productivity and nutritional values. This article emphasizes molecular tools for reducing losses of tropical fruits and vegetables.

Hydrogen sulphide infiltration downregulates oxidative metabolism and extends postharvest life of banana

M. W. Siddiqui et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of vacuum infiltrated H2S on ripening inhibition of banana, finding that treated fruits show lower accumulation of ROS, elevated phenols content, and enhanced antioxidant capacity. The inhibitory effects of H2S delay chlorophyll loss and reduce ethylene and CO2 production, resulting in longer shelf life for postharvest banana.

Harnessing the power of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) for improving fruit quality traits

R. Tayal et al.

Summary: Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is a gaseous molecule that is endogenously produced in plants and is considered a potential signaling agent in physiological processes. Many studies have explored the role of H2S in fruit ripening and quality enhancement, but there is still a gap in understanding the crosstalk of H2S with key players in fruit ripening, postharvest senescence, and fruit metabolism.

A NAC Transcription Factor from 'Sea Rice 86′ Enhances Salt Tolerance by Promoting Hydrogen Sulfide Production in Rice Seedlings

Yan Sun et al.

Summary: This study identifies a rice NAC transcription factor, OsNACL35, which plays a role in improving salt tolerance through enhanced H2S production. OsNACL35 overexpression increases resistance to salt stress and upregulates the expression of a H2S biosynthetic gene, OsDCD1. The findings suggest that OsNACL35 acts as a positive regulator linking H2S production to salt stress tolerance, and may have potential utility in breeding salt-tolerant rice cultivars.
