A 3D smart wood membrane with high flux and efficiency for separation of stabilized oil/water emulsions

Jianfei Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional smart membrane with switchable superhydrophobic-hydrophilic surfaces was successfully prepared by grafting photo-responsive poly-spiropyran on wood-based substrates. This novel membrane can efficiently separate stabilized water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions through reversible hydrophilic-hydrophobic transition by switching UV and visible light irradiation. The prepared 3D smart membranes exhibited exceptional high flux, efficiency, cycle stability, and durability for the separation of surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions. This work opens a new avenue for the design of functional biomass-derived membranes for efficient and sustainable oily wastewater treatment.

A high-toughness anti-pollution polyethersulfone membrane for efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsions

Jiaonan Cai et al.

Summary: Stable emulsion, the most challenging form of oily wastewater to treat, can be effectively addressed using membrane separation technology due to its high selectivity. By modifying hydroxyapatite with dopamine, the hydrophilicity of the membrane materials was increased, resulting in improved dispersion in the solution. Through reverse thermal separation (RTIPS) and subsequent tests, the modified hydroxyapatite-based membranes demonstrated high permeability (1515.46 L/m2 h, 14 times higher than raw membranes) and selectivity (99.80% and 99.92%). Moreover, the presence of hydroxyapatite enhanced the bonding between materials, making the membranes more ductile and less prone to breakage.

Upcycling Waste Pine nut Shell Membrane for Highly Efficient Separation of Crude Oil-in-Water Emulsion

Haoyu Li et al.

Summary: The discharge of oily sewage and frequent oil spills have caused serious harm to human production, life, and the ecological environment. The presence of surfactants in water makes oil-water mixtures form oil-in-water emulsions which are difficult to separate using traditional methods. The oily wastewater containing water-soluble pollutants like dyes and heavy metal ions also poses great harm to human health and the environment. A cost-efficient and environmentally friendly underwater superoleophobic pine nut shell membrane (PNSM) was prepared, which allows the separation of oil-in-water emulsion and adsorption of dyes and heavy metal ions. The PNSM also showed excellent toughness and flexibility, making it a promising candidate for multifunctional oily water remediation.
