Self-Supporting and Shell-Core Pd-Ni@Ni Nanowire Arrays Electrode as Anode of Direct Carbohydrazide Fuel Cell

Chao Peng et al.

Summary: "By using Ni as template for electrodeposition and subsequent galvanic replacement of Pd, a self-supporting and shell-core Pd-Ni@Ni nanowire arrays (NAs) catalytic electrode was prepared to address the high onset potential and gaseous product generation in carbohydrazide (CHZ) electrooxidation on pure Ni catalyst. The introduction of Pd with minute mass loadings of 2.7-5.3 μg cm(-2)achieved a negative shift of onset potential of CHZ electrooxidation by 320 mV regardless of Ni supports. Pd in Ni@Pd-Ni NAs electrode facilitated the chemical dissociation of CHZ into N2H4 and/or H-2, leading to side reactions such as N2H4 and/or H-2 electrooxidation. A direct CHZ fuel cell with Ni@Pd-Ni NAs anode exhibited an open circuit voltage of 1.05 V and a peak power density of 22.90 mV cm(-2)at 303 K operating temperature."

Fabrication of bimetallic Ni-Ag/CNFs nanoparticles as a catalyst in direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs)

Somia Awad et al.

Summary: In this study, an attempt was made to improve direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFC) by replacing platinum with cheaper materials. Nickel acetate-silver nitrate supported by carbon nanofibers with different concentrations of silver were synthesized and characterized. The synthesized catalysts showed good nanofiber morphology and the presence of nickel and silver nanoparticles. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the catalyst with a 90-10% ratio of nickel to silver exhibited the best electro-oxidation activity for both methanol and ethanol. This research provides a promising approach to replace platinum in DAFCs with a bimetallic Ni-Ag/CNFs catalyst.

Methanol electro oxidation on Ni-Pt-CrO/CNFs composite: morphology, structural, and electrochemical characterization

E. E. Abdel-Hady et al.

Summary: Prepared Ni1-xCrx nanoparticle samples loaded onto carbon nanofibers were studied for their electrocatalytic performance in methanol oxidation. Various techniques were used to analyze the samples' stoichiometry, structure, surface morphology, and electrochemical activity. It was found that adding Cr to Ni increased the activation energy of the electrooxidation reaction and improved the electrode stability. A powerful Ni-Pt-Cr-based catalyst for methanol electrooxidation was successfully fabricated using a novel approach.

Multi-walled carbon nanotube-supported Ni@Pd core-shell electrocatalyst for direct formate fuel cells

Saeid Abrari et al.

Summary: In this study, Ni@Pd core-shell nanoparticles were successfully deposited on multi-walled carbon nanotubes as catalysts for formate oxidation reaction. The results showed that the Ni@Pd core-shell nanoparticles exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity and stability compared to Ni-Pd alloy nanoparticles on multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

Summary: In this study, three nanoparticle samples with different molar ratios were loaded on carbon nanofibers using electrospinning and carbonization. The addition of cobalt in the Ni-CoPt/CNFs electrode resulted in lower activation energy and higher electrochemical stability, exhibiting the lowest onset potential and the highest current density in methanol.

Centrifugally Spun PVA/PVP Based B, N, F Doped Carbon Nanofiber Electrodes for Sodium Ion Batteries

Meltem Yanilmaz et al.

Summary: Due to their excellent properties, such as high electrical conductivity, high surface area, low density, high thermal stability, and chemical stability, carbon nanofibers have been widely used in various fields including energy storage, electromagnetic shielding, filtering, composites, sensors, and tissue engineering. It is crucial to fabricate carbon nanofibers using environmentally-friendly materials and fast, safe techniques to minimize the environmental impact caused by petroleum-based polymers. In this study, PVA/PVP nanofibers were fabricated by centrifugal spinning, and the effects of PVP content and carbonization conditions on the morphology and properties of the nanofibers were investigated. The results showed the successful fabrication of PVA/PVP-based carbon nanofibers with an average fiber diameter of 300 nm. Additionally, B, N, F-doped carbon nanofibers were also synthesized through centrifugal spinning and heat treatment, exhibiting high reversible capacity and stable cycling performance.

The 2-Propanol Fuel Cell: A Review from the Perspective of a Hydrogen Energy Economy

Matthew Brodt et al.

Summary: The 2-propanol fuel cell offers advantages over methanol fuel cells in terms of high voltage, reduced fuel crossover, and a benign toxicological fuel profile. Recent research has shown compatibility between 2-propanol fuel cells and LOHC systems, which can avoid high energy costs associated with dehydrogenation in hydrogen LOHC logistics.
