Resin content calculation of carbon fiber/poly (ether ether ketone) by thermogravimetric analysis

Chunrui Lu et al.

Summary: This study introduced a method for calculating resin content using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) for carbon fiber/ poly (ether ether ketone) (CF/PEEK) composites. The TGA curves and DTG curves were divided into four stages, and the resin content was accurately obtained from the transitional stage and stable stage. Results compared with other methods showed that the TGA method was suitable for resin fraction calculation with slight difference.

Influence of deposition rates on the mode I fracture toughness of in-situ consolidated thermoplastic composites

Matthew J. Shafaq et al.

Summary: Innovations in recycling, automated and out-of-autoclave processes have renewed significant interests in carbon fibre-polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) thermoplastic composites. The cooling rates during processing affect the crystallinity and fracture toughness of semi-crystalline thermoplastics. This study examines the influence of automated fibre placement (AFP) deposition rates on the crystallinity and fracture toughness of CF/PEEK composites and highlights the importance of good consolidation in improving fracture toughness performance.

Preparation of PEEK/MWCNT nanocomposites via MWCNT-induced interfacial crystallization mediated compatibilization

Sinan Feng et al.

Summary: This study presents an alternative strategy for the preparation of high-performance PEEK/MWCNT nanocomposites using an interfacial crystallization approach. By utilizing a polyetheretherketimine (PEEKt) to prepare PEEK nanocomposites, good dispersion of MWCNTs in the PEEK matrix is achieved without the need for surfactants or compatibilizers. The resulting nanocomposites exhibit improved properties and have potential applications in fields such as energy production, electrochemical devices, and coatings under harsh conditions.

In situ consolidation process-based fabrication and interlaminar modification mechanism associated with CF/PEEK multiscale nanocomposites characterized by interlaminar doping of CNTs

Shouzheng Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel fabrication method based on the automated fiber placement method was used to develop multiscale thermoplastic nanocomposites. The method effectively improved the crystallinity and reduced the void content of the composites, but failed to effectively reduce the interlaminar resin-rich zone. To enhance the interlaminar performance, carbon nanotube-based paper was embedded into the interlayers. Molecular dynamics analysis and experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of CNT dispersion on the interlaminar performance.

Effect of material and processing parameters on fiber pinning effect and resultant interfacial bonding strength of CF/PEEK bilayer parts in overmolding process

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of material and process parameters on the interface binding strength of overmolded bilayer parts. By regulating these parameters and optimizing the fiber pinning effect, the interlaminar shear strength of the bilayer parts was significantly increased. Fiber content, interfacial temperature, and fiber orientation were identified as the main factors affecting the fiber pinning effect.

A comparative study of the crystallinity of polyetheretherketone by using density, DSC, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy techniques

M. Doumeng et al.

Summary: A study on the crystallinity of Polyetheretherketone was conducted using different techniques including density measurement, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, X-ray Diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The density measurement gave the most accurate result for the degree of crystallinity, while DSC tended to overestimate and XRD tended to underestimate the crystallinity. Raman spectroscopy was found to be suitable for determining local crystallinity on the surface of the sample.

Summary: The interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber (CF) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) was improved by modifying the interface with hydroxylated PEEK grafted onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The modified CFs showed increased surface roughness, more polar groups, decreased contact angle, and increased surface energy, leading to enhanced wettability and improved physical adhesion, resulting in significant enhancements in the mechanical properties of the CF/PEEK composites.
