Continuum damage mechanics to predict rubber fatigue life under multiaxial loadings

Andreas Hottin et al.

Summary: The continuum damage mechanics approach allows quantifying material degradation using a damage variable D. A new equivalent stress is developed to analyze multiaxial fatigue in rubbers, which is validated through fatigue experiments on Natural Rubber and comparison with data on Styrene Butadiene Rubber. The nice agreement between experimental data and model estimates in terms of fatigue life makes this approach a robust tool for designing rubber parts.

Numerical studies on the self-heating phenomenon of elastomers based on finite thermoviscoelasticity

Jonas Schroeder et al.

Summary: Elastomer components are widely used in engineering due to their material characteristics, but are subject to hysteresis and self-heating from large cyclic deformations. A modified model of finite thermoviscoelasticity was used to investigate dissipative heating in elastomers, introducing a new parameter to identify critical loads and presenting dissipation-sensitive temperature ranges. The influence of material properties on steady-state equilibrium was also demonstrated for the first time through parameter studies.
