Durability and long-term behaviour of shape memory polymers and composites for the space industry-A review of current status and future perspectives

Sandaruwan Jayalath et al.

Summary: Rapid developments in thermoset and thermoplastic shape memory polymers (SMPs) have greatly increased their engineering applications. This review thoroughly investigates the durability of SMPs and SMP composites (SMPCs) over the past two decades, discussing important time-dependant characteristics and long-term effects. Gaps in current knowledge are identified and recommendations for developing more durable SMPCs are suggested.

Summary: Shape memory polymers have great potential in aviation and biomedical industries, but their full utilization is limited by the lack of understanding of their environmental degradation mechanisms. This study investigates the effects of UV-induced aging on the chemical structure, thermo-mechanical, morphological, and optical properties of an epoxy-based shape memory polymer, providing insights into the changes that occur during degradation.

Photodegradation mechanisms and physico-chemical properties of EPON-IPD epoxy-based polymers

Summary: UV exposure results in an increase in the number and dimension of microcracks on the surface of shape memory polymers, while also increasing the glass transition temperature of the polymer. After 600 hours of UV radiation, the elastic modulus and hardness of the polymer increased by approximately 22% and 33%, respectively.

Summary: Biodegradable shape memory polymers (BSMPs) have long-term biocompatibility and can form zero-waste products, making them ideal for various medical applications and preventing biofilm formation or tissue damage. The properties of BSMPs, such as shape memory performance and degradation rate, can be controlled by adjusting comonomer content and crystallinity.
