Sandwich structures based on fused filament fabrication 3D-printed polylactic acid honeycomb and poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanocomposites for microwave absorbing applications

Debora P. Schmitz et al.

Summary: Polylactic acid (PLA)-based honeycomb samples with different cell sizes and thickness were prepared using 3D printing technology. These honeycomb structures were used as core components in sandwiched multilayer structures with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and/or PVDF/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites. The properties of these structures in terms of microwave absorption were investigated, and it was found that the honeycomb design and the presence of an impedance matching layer influenced the results.

Free and forced vibration response of a laminated composite sandwich beam with dual honeycomb core: Numerical and experimental study

Narayanan Thanikasalam et al.

Summary: This study investigates the free and forced vibration characteristics of composite sandwich beams with single-core (SC) and dual-core (DC). The wet hand-layup technique is used for the composite face sheet, while the honeycomb cores are 3D printed using fused filament fabrication method. The natural frequencies are measured through experimental modal tests and validated with a finite-element model. Parametric studies are conducted to analyze the effect of different parameters on the vibration behavior of DC sandwich beams. It is found that the inclusion of a core enhances the vibration behavior of the sandwich beam.

An electric-driven variable stiffness morphing skin: Preparation and properties

Xiaoming Ren et al.

Summary: This article investigates composite morphing skins based on hydro-epoxy resin/carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile/maleic anhydride matrix, doped with conductive carbon black (CB). The in-plane and out-of-plane properties of the skins can be adjusted by varying the CB content. Results show that the in-plane tensile strength decreases as the CB content increases. The electrical resistivity of the skin decreases sharply at a low-percolation threshold and then maintains a low and steady level. In terms of shape memory, the selected composite skins exhibit excellent thermo-driven and electro-active shape recovery properties.

Low-Cycle Fatigue Behavior of 3D-Printed PLA Reinforced with Natural Filler

Miroslav Muller et al.

Summary: The current research focuses on evaluating the fatigue behavior of pure PLA and PLA reinforced with natural fillers like pinewood, bamboo, and cork, showing that their fatigue life is similar under the same loading conditions. The presence of natural fillers did not reduce the material's ability to respond to low-cycle fatigue, and cyclic testing did not significantly affect the tensile strength and durability of PLA-based materials. Furthermore, under cyclic loading, the visco-elastic behavior of tested materials increased, along with the presence of porosity and good interfacial compatibility with biological fillers as shown by SEM analysis.

Spanwise wing morphing using multistable cellular metastructures

D. Matthew Boston et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the concept of morphing wings, which provide additional functionality and performance through spanwise morphing. A novel lightweight structure composed of cellular metamaterials is proposed, allowing large elastic deformations while maintaining load-bearing capacity. The mechanical properties of different multistable honeycombs are characterized, and two honeycombs are selected to develop a shape adaptable metastructure. The performance of a hybrid span-morphing wing concept is assessed using static aeroelastic analysis, demonstrating increased lift without increased wing deflection.

A comprehensive analysis on the processing-structure-property relationships of FDM-based 3-D printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK) structures

Prabaha Sikder et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of various FDM parameters on the mechanical properties of 3D printed PEEK and establishes a processing-structure-property relationship for FDM-developed PEEK parts. The study finds that nozzle and chamber temperature, layer height, and print speed are critical for developing robust PEEK structures. Annealing contributes to achieving PEEK parts with excellent tensile, compressive, and flexural strengths.

The Shape Memory Properties and Actuation Performances of 4D Printing Poly (Ether-Ether-Ketone)

Yuting Zhou et al.

Summary: Shape-memory polymers have important applications in the fields of mechanism and biomedical engineering, but their use in harsh environments is still challenging. Research has found that polyether-ether-ketone with high glass transition temperature exhibits excellent high-temperature resistance and shape memory behavior. By studying its shape-memory properties and actuation performance, the potential of this polymer in aerospace has been demonstrated.

Characterisation of void and fiber distribution in 3D printed carbon-fiber/PEEK using X-ray computed tomography

S. Sommacal et al.

Summary: The study found that the 3D printing process did not eliminate the voids present in the feedstock filament, and the variation of key printing parameters had minor effects on void content in the printed samples. However, the depositional nature of the printing process strongly influenced the internal geometry of the samples.

Fracture behavior of 3D printed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites

Denizhan Yavas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the inter-layer and cross-layer fracture behavior of 3D printed short CFRP composites through experimental and numerical methods. The cross-layer fracture toughness was found to be three-fold of the inter-layer counterparts. Fracture surface morphology and crack-tip strain field demonstrated different toughening mechanisms for cross-layer and inter-layer fractures.
