Fabrication of flame-retardant wood plastic composites based on wasted bean dregs with recycled PE via mechanochemical crosslinking

Merewai Jier et al.

Summary: Fabrication of high-performance fire-retardant wood-plastic composites (WPCs) using recycled plastic and wasted biomass materials was achieved through melt-blending of recycled high density polyethylene (R-PE), bean dregs, and intumesce flame retardant (IFR) by mechanochemical crosslinking. The resulting WPC exhibited satisfactory flame retardancy, reduced heat release rate, smoke production, and improved mechanical properties. This work presents an innovative and feasible approach for the fabrication of fire-retardant WPCs, contributing to the circular economy and sustainability in accordance with global greening strategies.
