Comparative study on annealing-induced high-impact toughness of linear and grafted polypropylene random copolymer

Jingru Liu et al.

Summary: The comparative study on the annealing-induced high impact toughness of linear and grafted polypropylene random copolymer (PPR and MPP) was conducted. It was found that PPR displayed higher flexural modulus and impact strength, as well as lower elongation at break than MPP. After thermal annealing treatment, the crystallinity and impact strength of PPR were significantly increased compared to those of MPP.

In-situ growth of layered double hydroxide on montmorillonite nanosheets to improve the flame retardant performance of ABS resin

Bainian Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, LDH was grown on MMT nanosheets to obtain the hybrid LM, which showed a periodically alternating layered structure. The ABS composite containing LM and IFR exhibited improved flame-retardant performance and had lesser impacts on its mechanical properties in cone calorimeter tests.

Synergistic effect of β-nucleating agent and layered double hydroxide on high toughness of polypropylene composites

Xincheng Guo et al.

Summary: The content ratio of layered double hydroxide (LDH) and beta-nucleating agent (CaHA), mechanical properties, and crystallization behaviors of PP/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/LDH ternary composites are investigated. The highest notched impact strength is achieved in the 6PEL2 sample with CaHA of 0.03 phr and LDH of 5.70 phr, which is about 100% higher than that of pure PP. This is attributed to the highest relative content of beta-crystals in 6PEL2 and the formation of a large number of cavities absorbing the impact energy.

Design and Fabrication of a Novel LDH@GO Nanohybrid Material for Its Application Potentials in Polypropylene

Lingtong Li et al.

Summary: A novel DOPOi-LDH@GO hybrid nanomaterial was fabricated to improve the dispersity and compatibility of layered double hydroxide (LDH) in polypropylene (PP) matrix. The thermal stability and crystallization behaviors of PP/DOPOi-LDH@GO nanocomposites were significantly different from neat PP, with lower thermal stability and decreased spherulite size.

Effects of compatibilizers on microstructural and viscoelastic properties of polypropylene/polybutadiene thermoplastics vulcanizates

Somayeh Rafiei et al.

Summary: Compatibilized thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on polypropylene (PP) and polybutadiene rubber (PBR) were studied in terms of their morphology, rheology, and dynamic mechanical properties. The addition of compatibilizer led to finer and more uniform distribution of rubber domains in both 30/70 and 40/60 blends, with only the 40/60 composition showing a co-continuous morphology. Rheology results were highly influenced by the content of compatibilizer, and the incorporation of PBR into PP resulted in enhanced elastic response, particularly in the 30/70 composition. Dynamic mechanical analysis confirmed the enhanced compatibility of TPVs with the addition of a compatibilizer.

Flammability, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer/polypropylene composites filled with intumescent flame retardant and inorganic synergists

Can Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that in EPDM/PP/IFR composites, the synergistic effect of ZB and EG with IFR is better than OMMT. The addition of inorganic particles improves the thermal stability of the composites and forms dense char layers. Additionally, composites with inorganic particles exhibit more rubber-filler interaction, restricting the movement of rubber chains.

Rheological and thermal properties of polypropylene blends based in a low molecular weight EVA

Anibal G. Ferrofino et al.

Summary: Blends of PP and EVA with a viscosity ratio of 240 showed a two-phase structure with EVA domains dispersed in the PP matrix, with increasing domain size and crystallization temperature with EVA concentration. The interfacial tension between PP and EVA was found to be very small. Additionally, the presence of EVA increased the degradation temperature and rate of PP.

Toughening mechanism of PP/EPR/SiO2 composites with superior low-temperature toughness

Shunjie Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toughening mechanism of iPP/EPR/SiO2 composites at low temperatures. It was found that the synergistic regulation of T-bd by EPR and SiO2, as well as the increase in silica content, could effectively enhance the low-temperature toughness of the composites. Additionally, the proposed toughening mechanism involved the increased internal friction loss induced by the expanded phase interfacial area between EPR and iPP matrix, leading to high-elastic deformation and ductile fracture behavior in the composite at low temperatures.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of PP crystallization on its electrical conductivity and electrical percolation threshold in a blend with PS containing MWCNTs. By utilizing a two-step approach and specific thermal treatments, ultra-low PT values were achieved for the PP/PS/MWCNTs system, attributed to volume exclusion of PP crystals without altering the blend morphology.
