Hygrothermal aging and water absorption behavior of radial tire composites

Ning Jiang et al.

Summary: This study focused on the water absorption behavior and durability of RT composites in the hygrothermal environment. The results showed that water diffusion of RT composites followed Fickian's law in the initial stage, with kinetic parameters of water absorption closely related to temperature changes. Moisture led to poor interface and degradation of RT composites, with natural rubber matrix swelling and developing stresses that could cause microcracks.

Microstructure and properties of layered metal/rubber composites subjected to cyclic and impact loading

S. V. Kuteneva et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructure and mechanical properties of five-layered metal/rubber composites. The composites were produced by hot bonding of low carbon steel or/and aluminum alloy and rubber layers. Impact cyclic and fatigue tests were carried out to study the mechanical properties of the composites. The results show that the steel/rubber joint has a higher adhesion bond strength than the aluminum/rubber joint, and the composite with a steel and rubber component has a high impact strength and resistance to fatigue fracture.

Moisture transport in laminated wood and bamboo composites bonded with thin adhesive layers - A numerical study

Zahra Afshari et al.

Summary: Sustainable materials like laminated wood and bamboo composites are increasingly used in green building construction worldwide. This study aimed to develop and validate a physically-based tool to understand the transient moisture transport in layered orthotropic composites made from wood and bamboo. Results showed that the choice of adhesive and the physical properties of wood/bamboo significantly affected the panel's moisture profile.

Hydrothermal Aging Mechanisms of All-Steel Radial Tire Composites

Ning Jiang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the effects of hydrothermal environment on the aging of all-steel radial tire (ASRT) composites. The results show that the mechanical properties of ASRT composites decrease due to the degradation of the rubber matrix and the poor interface between the steel fiber and rubber matrix during the hygrothermal aging process.

Fiber packing and morphology driven moisture diffusion mechanics in reinforced composites

Sabarinathan P. Subramaniyan et al.

Summary: This paper elucidates the impact of fiber packing and morphology on moisture diffusion in FRPC materials, and establishes a relationship between tortuosity and diffusivity. By studying the influence of impermeable fiber architectures on moisture diffusion pathways, the authors provide insight into calculating diffusivity using tortuosity for a given micro-architecture.

The reinforcement of styrene butadiene rubber composites with simple environmentally friendly aramid fiber modification

Yongchun Ji et al.

Summary: This study described three simple and environmentally friendly methods for surface treatment of aramid fiber. The results showed that the mechanical properties of composites with coated aramid fiber were significantly improved compared to those with aramid fiber treated by thermal oxidation, although the heat generation was higher. The thermal oxidation method not only improved the constant elongation stress and tear strength, but also reduced the heat generation of the materials.

Modeling and experimental study of tire deformation characteristics under high-speed rolling condition

Xueliang Gao et al.

Summary: A combined approach for studying tire rolling deformation is proposed in this research, utilizing an extended flexible ring tire model and a three-dimensional high-speed stereo vision system to accurately predict tire deformation and measure high-speed rolling tire deformations. Experimental results reveal different deformations in the radial and tangential directions of rolling tires, with vertical load having a more significant influence than tire pressure on rolling deformation. The capability of the improved ring tire model to describe these observed phenomena has been validated through comparisons between simulations and measurements.

Belahcen Djellouli et al.

Summary: The study presents an analysis of the hygroscopic and hygroelastic behaviors of unidirectional flax fibre-reinforced epoxy composite. Through experiments and finite element simulations, it was found that water diffusion in the composite material exhibits a directional preference, leading to high compressive and tensile stresses in flax fibres and epoxy matrix during water absorption.

Summary: This paper introduces a structure level multiphysics model that integrates a nonlocal continuum damage model in a curvilinear coordinate system using UV and moisture deterioration variables homogenized from a micromechanics model. By linking the application of analysis to the architecture or manufacturing digital model, more accurate predictions of mechanical performance can be obtained.
