Which cell death modality wins the contest for photodynamic therapy of cancer?

Tatiana Mishchenko et al.

Summary: This article discusses the non-conventional cell death mechanisms triggered by PDT, emphasizing the role and contribution of immunogenic cell death (ICD) in these pathways. The authors also discuss the obstacles and propose areas of research to overcome these challenges and develop highly effective anti-cancer therapy based on PDT.

Selective Photo-Assisted Eradication of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells through Aptamer Decoration of Doped Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles

Luis Exequiel Ibarra et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) may be a promising alternative for the treatment of breast cancer, especially for aggressive types like triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). A recent study explored the use of conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) as photosensitizers for targeted PDT. By attaching unique 2'-Fluoropyrimidines-RNA-aptamers to the surface of CPNs, the researchers aimed to improve the selectivity of the treatment for TNBC cells. Results showed that CL4, sTN29, and sTN58 aptamers were effective in selective tumor targeting and improving PDT efficacy in TNBC cells.

Porphyrins and phthalocyanines as biomimetic tools for photocatalytic H2 production and CO2 reduction

Emmanouil Nikoloudakis et al.

Summary: The increasing energy demand and environmental issues call for renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources. Photocatalytic production of H-2 from water and conversion of CO2 into chemical fuels have been extensively studied. This review focuses on the recent advances in photocatalytic systems containing porphyrin or phthalocyanine derivatives for H-2 production and CO2 reduction. Various approaches for improving photosensitizing activity and catalytic performance are discussed, as well as the development of heterogeneous systems using nanostructures, organic frameworks, and semiconductor sensitization. The research in photocatalytic systems remains challenging due to limitations for large-scale application.

The potential of photodynamic therapy in current breast cancer treatment methodologies

Elzbieta Ostasnka et al.

Summary: Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a well-known alternative cancer treatment that relies on light activation of a photosensitizer in the presence of oxygen to induce cytotoxic effects in cancer cells. Proper light delivery and the selection of an appropriate photosensitizer are crucial for the effectiveness of PDT in treating cancer.

Photodynamic Therapy for the Treatment and Diagnosis of Cancer-A Review of the Current Clinical Status

Gurcan Gunaydin et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been used as an anti-tumor treatment method for a long time, involving the combination of light energy with photosensitizers (PS) to destruct tumor cells. Compared to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, PDT has fewer side effects and toxicity. Additionally, PDT can also be used for diagnostic purposes in tumors, known as photodynamic diagnosis (PDD).
