Respiration regimes in rivers: Partitioning source-specific respiration from metabolism time series

Enrico Bertuzzo et al.

Summary: This study used an inverse modeling framework to estimate the contribution of different organic matter sources to stream ecosystem respiration and found that respiration of autochthonous organic matter was correlated with seasonal peaks in gross primary production, while respiration associated with litter inputs was larger in smaller streams.

Simultaneous visualization of flow fields and oxygen concentrations to unravel transport and metabolic processes in biological systems

Soeren Ahmerkamp et al.

Summary: This study presents sensPIV, a method for simultaneously measuring O2 concentrations and flow fields. By tracking O2-sensitive microparticles in fluid, the researchers measured O2 transport within microfluidic devices, sinking model aggregates, and complex colony-forming corals, and found that corals use ciliary movement to link zones of photosynthetic O2 production to zones of O2 consumption.

Water column contributions to the metabolism and nutrient dynamics of mid-sized rivers

Alexander J. Reisinger et al.

Summary: Lotic and lentic ecosystems are traditionally believed to be dominated by benthic or water column processes, but mid-sized rivers act as a transition zone where both processes play a significant role. The water column in mid-sized rivers contributes more to whole river gross primary production (GPP) than to ecosystem respiration (ER) and its nutrient uptake is influenced by human land use and nutrient availability.

The Metabolic Regimes at the Scale of an Entire Stream Network Unveiled Through Sensor Data and Machine Learning

Pier Luigi Segatto et al.

Summary: Through combining Random Forest with sensor data time series, we successfully predicted the metabolic patterns of 292 individual stream reaches in the entire watershed and revealed the characteristics of the network they form. We found that the network-wide metabolism is mainly heterotrophic, with a clear peak of autotrophy in spring. Furthermore, we also discovered large terrestrial subsidies fueling ecosystem respiration.

Evaluating a Laboratory Flume Microbiome as a Window Into Natural Riverbed Biogeochemistry

Summary: Research indicates that the microbiome of laboratory flumes more closely resembles natural riverbed sediments, supporting the use of flume experiments for investigating natural microbially-mediated biogeochemical processes in riverbeds.
