A typology of smallholder livestock production systems reflecting the impact of the development of a local milk collection industry: Case study of Fatick region, Senegal

Summary: Senegal heavily relies on smallholder livestock production for livelihoods, but the effects of climate change and lack of understanding of specific farming problems have caused challenges. Through statistical clustering techniques, a livestock typology was developed in the Fatick region, revealing the coexistence of three different production cluster systems. The implementation of a dairy processor has boosted local productivity and income for farmers, but concerns remain about low milk buying prices.

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) Vaccination Cost Estimates in Burkina Faso

Summary: This study aimed to assess and describe the cost of delivering PPR vaccines in Burkina Faso using data from the 2020 vaccination campaign. The results showed that the unit cost of vaccinating a sheep or goat through the public and private channels was estimated at XOF 169 (USD 0.3) and XOF 103 (USD 0.18) respectively. Field activities and personnel costs accounted for the highest share of the vaccination cost.

Zoonotic diseases and the COVID-19 pandemic: Economic impacts on Somaliland's livestock exports to Saudi Arabia

Summary: The partial ban on livestock imports from Somalia imposed by Saudi Arabia has resulted in significant negative economic impacts for the government and value chain actors, with an estimated cumulative loss of US$ 770 million over a five-year period. The additional losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic were estimated at US$ 42 million, mainly impacting livestock producers, who incurred around 54% of the total losses. This study highlights the multifaceted socio-economic and socio-cultural impacts faced by the livestock sector and general economy in the wake of public health restrictions.

Gender and intersectional analysis of livestock vaccine value chains in Kaffrine, Senegal
