Building Cetacean Locomotor Muscles throughout Ontogeny to Support High-Performance Swimming into Adulthood

S. R. Noren

Summary: The demands on the locomotor muscles of cetaceans at birth are different from terrestrial mammals due to water's buoyant force supporting body weight. Despite this, postnatal development is still necessary for cetaceans to attain mature musculature. Neonatal cetaceans have lower muscle mass and less developed locomotor muscles compared to adults, resulting in diminished swim performance.

Improvement of Protein Solubility in Macromolecular Crowding during Myoglobin Evolution

Yasuhiro Isogai et al.

Summary: Living cells with high concentrations of biomolecules have evolved globular proteins to increase their solubility. The O-2-storage protein myoglobin (Mb) in diving mammals has evolved to maintain high solubility under crowding conditions or increase tolerance against macromolecular precipitants. The study shows that precipitant tolerance is related to the surface net charges (Z(Mb)) of Mb molecules and can be explained by electrostatic repulsion.

GAGA factor: a multifunctional pioneering chromatin protein

Darya Chetverina et al.

Summary: The Drosophila GAGA factor (GAF) is a multifunctional protein involved in nucleosome organization, gene expression regulation, enhancer-promoter communication, chromosome structure, and mitosis. It is believed to act as a pioneer factor in creating nucleosome-free regions for regulatory elements, allowing other factors to bind and carry out specialized functions. GAF interacts with chromatin remodelers and proteins involved in various regulatory functions.

Loss of splicing factor IK impairs normal skeletal muscle development

Hye In Ka et al.

Summary: IK is a splicing factor that plays an essential role in embryonic development in vertebrates, promoting normal skeletal muscle development and myogenic differentiation in vivo and in vitro. Depletion of IK leads to downregulation of genes involved in skeletal muscle differentiation and improper pre-mRNA splicing, resulting in impaired neuromuscular junction and fast-twitch muscle development in zebrafish embryos.
