Predicting wildfire ignition causes in Southern France using eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods

Christos Bountzouklis et al.

Summary: The percentage of wildfires with an undetermined origin is significant in Europe and Mediterranean France. Fire experts recognize the importance of documenting and researching fire causes for effective fire policies and prevention strategies. Machine learning is being used to classify fire ignitions based on environmental and anthropogenic features in Southern France, with factors such as spatiotemporal properties and topographic characteristics being considered important.

Geometric SMOTE for regression

Luis Camacho et al.

Summary: Learning from imbalanced data sets is challenging, especially in regression problems where solutions are scarce. This article proposes extending the G-SMOTE algorithm to regression tasks, showing its superiority over other methods through empirical results.

A boosting resampling method for regression based on a conditional variational autoencoder

Yang Huang et al.

Summary: Resampling is commonly used for imbalanced data, but there is limited research on imbalanced regression data. This study divides regression data into rare samples and normal samples, and proposes a boosting resampling method based on a conditional variational autoencoder.

Time-use movement behaviors are associated with scores of depression/anxiety among adolescents: A compositional data analysis

Fernanda Rocha de Faria et al.

Summary: Movement behaviors are associated with levels of depression/anxiety in adolescents. Reallocating time between different movement behaviors can result in differences in depression/anxiety levels. Sleep, sedentary behavior, light physical activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity all have associations with levels of depression/anxiety. Replacing sedentary behavior with light physical activity is associated with improvement in depression/anxiety levels, while replacing light physical activity with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity is associated with worsening of depression/anxiety levels.

Forecasting heterogeneous municipal solid waste generation via Bayesian-optimised neural network with ensemble learning for improved generalisation

Zheng Xuan Hoy et al.

Summary: This research develops a Bayesian-optimised artificial neural network (ANN) model coupled with ensemble uncertainty analysis for forecasting country-scale trends in municipal solid waste (MSW) physical composition. The Bayesian-optimised ANN models provide more reliable and accurate predictions with smaller errors compared to default models.

Rapid measurement of classification levels of primary macronutrients in durian (Durio zibethinus Murray CV. Mon Thong) leaves using FT-NIR spectrometer and comparing the effect of imbalanced and balanced data for modelling

Thitima Phanomsophon et al.

Summary: This study focused on rapidly classifying primary macronutrient levels in durian leaves using FT-NIR spectroscopy and found that the model performed better for fresh leaf samples than dried ground leaf samples. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were the best algorithm, exhibiting high validation accuracies when the data were analyzed with SMOTE.

An oversampling method for multi-class imbalanced data based on composite weights

Mingyang Deng et al.

Summary: The proposed oversampling method based on classification ranking and weight setting effectively addresses the oversampling problem of multi-class small samples, achieving balanced data distribution while maintaining the properties of the original samples. Compared to other algorithms, it also shows higher classification accuracy of around 90%, demonstrating practicality and generality for imbalanced multi-class samples.

Mapping of Coral Reefs with Multispectral Satellites: A Review of Recent Papers

Teo Nguyen et al.

Summary: Coral reefs, vital for marine biodiversity, are declining due to global change and human pressure, making precise mapping of coral reef habitat crucial for monitoring. Object-based methods are more accurate than pixel-based ones, with Support Vector Machine and Random Forest being the most accurate techniques. High spatial resolution satellites provide the best images for mapping, with preprocessing steps and additional inputs contributing to improved accuracy.
