Investigating the effect of cholinergic and adrenergic blocking agents on maternal-fetal heart rates and their interactions in mice fetuses

Ahsan H. Khandoker et al.

Summary: This study examines the role of autonomic control in the variability of maternal and fetal heart rates, as well as the prevalence of heartbeats phase coupling in mice. The results show that atropine and propranolol have different effects on maternal and fetal heart rates, and the number of heartbeats considered also affects the phase coupling. This approach may be important for evaluating the impact of maternal autonomic regulation on fetal health and obstetric complications.

Longitudinally Tracking Maternal Autonomic Modulation During Normal Pregnancy With Comprehensive Heart Rate Variability Analyses

Maretha Bester et al.

Summary: Changes in maternal autonomic nervous system are crucial for supporting the physiological changes in pregnancy. Deficient autonomic adaptation may lead to complications, hence monitoring autonomic modulation throughout pregnancy could aid in early detection of deteriorating maternal health. Using heart rate variability, maternal autonomic activity was found to decrease, with notable changes from second to third trimester, suggesting a dynamic response to gestational demands.

Deep learning identifies cardiac coupling between mother and fetus during gestation

Mohanad Alkhodari et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel artificial intelligence approach, deep coherence, which uses non-invasive electrocardiography to explain the relationship between maternal and fetal heartbeats during pregnancy. The performance of this approach was validated using a deep learning tool, achieving high accuracy in identifying coupling scenarios. The interpretability of deep learning was significant in explaining synchronization mechanisms between the maternal and fetal heartbeats.

Fetal heart rate during maternal sleep

Janet A. DiPietro et al.

Summary: The study found that there were both similarities and differences in heart rate patterns between pregnant women and their fetuses. Both fetal and maternal heart rates decreased during the night, with a steeper decline before 01:00. Fetal heart rate decreased when the mother fell asleep, but was not significantly associated with maternal sleep stages.

Joint symbolic dynamics identifies differences in the maternal-fetal cardiac coupling between nonlaboring and laboring women

Carla Andrea Tepichin-Castro et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in studying maternal-fetal cardiac coupling to understand fetal development during pregnancy. This study analyzed short-term MFCC between nonlaboring and laboring women using nonlinear joint symbolic dynamics. The results showed increased short-term MFCC during labor, possibly due to uterine contractions and other interactions affecting maternal and fetal heart rhythms.

Benchmarking Transfer Entropy Methods for the Study of Linear and Nonlinear Cardio-Respiratory Interactions

Andrea Rozo et al.

Summary: Transfer entropy has been used to quantify interactions between physiological systems, with different estimation methods available. This study compared five methods and found that adaptive partitioning was the best for quantifying interactions. When applied to polysomnography data, it was observed that transfer entropy increased during deep sleep, with results varying based on respiratory signal type and sampling frequency.

Effects of cognitive workload on heart and locomotor rhythms coupling

Daniela De Bartolo et al.

Summary: Different physiological signals can be coupled under specific conditions, with cognitive-motor interference observed during dual-task walking experiments. The cardiac and locomotor rhythms were found to be more strongly coupled at faster walking speeds, while coupling was weaker or absent at slower speeds and comfortable walking speeds.

Estimating Gestational Age From Maternal-Fetal Heart Rate Coupling Parameters

Maisam Wahbah et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal-fetal heart rate coupling parameters and fetal development, as well as to estimate fetal gestational age using these parameters. By considering heart rate coupling strength and variability across different recording lengths, the study found that a multivariate model incorporating various parameters can more reliably estimate fetal gestational age.
