In situ probing of atmospheric-pressure warm air glow discharge for nitrogen fixation by multiple laser spectroscopies

Zhan Shu et al.

Summary: This study measured the gas temperature distribution and absolute densities of nitrogen compounds in a DC-driven warm air glow discharge at atmospheric pressure using advanced laser spectroscopic diagnostics. The results showed that the distributions of gas temperature, atomic oxygen, and nitrogen atoms exhibited peaks in the hot discharge center. A hollow 'doughnut' shape characterized by the NO molecule was observed under certain conditions. The simulation revealed that this hollow pattern of NO was mainly induced by the radial diffusion of species due to the steep spatial gradient of gas temperature.

Toward Reducing the Energy Cost of NOx Formation in a Spark Discharge Reactor through Pinpointing Its Mechanism

Ayman A. Abdelaziz et al.

Summary: Interest in sustainable nitrogen fertilizer production using plasma technology is growing rapidly. This study focuses on improving the efficiency of this process through comprehensive experiments using spark discharge. The results reveal that applying a bipolar voltage at high frequencies greatly enhances the yield and efficiency, and increasing the electrode gap effectively enhances the energy usage. The use of a floating electrode in the large gap further improves the NOx production at a lower energy cost.

Sustainable NOx production from air in pulsed plasma: elucidating the chemistry behind the low energy consumption

Elise Vervloessem et al.

Summary: N-based fertilisers are crucial for supporting the growing world population, but current industrial N-2 fixation depends heavily on fossil fuels, driving the need for fossil-free pathways. The study presents a pulsed plasma jet for direct NOx production from air, achieving a record-low energy consumption through non-thermal Zeldovich mechanism. The insights gained from this study are important for developing energy-efficient plasma sources for NOx production in the future.

N2 vibrational excitation in atmospheric pressure ns pulse and RF plasma jets

Caleb Richards et al.

Summary: In this study, the vibrational and translational-rotational temperatures in quasi-two-dimensional atmospheric pressure plasma jets sustained by ns pulse and RF discharges in nitrogen/noble gas mixtures were measured using broadband vibrational Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS). The results show that the RF plasma jets have stronger vibrational excitation compared to the ns pulse discharge, and the vibrational temperature in the ns pulse discharge is affected by the presence of helium atoms. The experimental data in the RF plasma jet in N-2/Ar are compared with kinetic modeling predictions.

N2 Fixation by Plasma-Activated Processes

Lea R. Winter et al.

Summary: This paper compares the energy requirements, CO2 emissions, and commodity prices of alternative plasma-activated ammonia synthesis with the conventional Haber-Bosch process. Economic positive externalities are evaluated for renewable energy-powered modular ammonia production, with a 6-fold improvement in plasma process efficiency projected to make it competitive. Technological prospects for achieving the thresholds are discussed, including advancements in plasma-catalyst synergy and direct reactions of N-2 with plasma-activated water.

Vibrational CARS measurements in a near-atmospheric pressure plasma jet in nitrogen: I. Measurement procedure and results

J. Kuhfeld et al.

Summary: In this study, the vibrational excitation of nitrogen molecules in a plasma was measured using CARS, revealing the characteristics of the vibrational distribution function. The electric field strength was also measured during the discharge pulse. Population differences between neighboring vibrational states were obtained during the afterglow period using a fitting approach, capturing the more complex vibrational dynamics.

Evidence of near-the-limit energy cost NO formation in atmospheric spark discharge

Nikolay Britun et al.

Summary: A very low energy cost for NO radical formation in atmospheric spark discharge has been reported, with the minimum EC achieved in the spark regime before the transition and the maximum NO yield in the glow regime. The low EC is associated with discharge non-equilibrium caused by short spark duration.

NOx production in a rotating gliding arc plasma: potential avenue for sustainable nitrogen fixation

Fatme Jardali et al.

Summary: A novel rotating gliding arc plasma was proposed for direct NOx production to yield high nitrogen content organic fertilizers without pollution associated with ammonia emission. Higher NOx concentrations were achieved in steady mode with the lowest energy consumption, attributed to combined thermal and vibrationally-promoted Zeldovich mechanisms.
