Formation of wide negative streamers in air and helium: the role of fast electrons

N. Yu Babaeva et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the structure and dynamics of wide negative streamers in air and helium under high overvoltages with short rise times applied to a sharp needle electrode, using both experimental and computational methods. Different shapes of streamers were observed when fast electrons were taken into account. The velocities of streamers were significantly increased with the presence of fast electrons. Additionally, the study also observed the formation of a discharge with several parallel streamers under high overvoltages.

Positive and negative streamers in air and nitrogen in a sharply inhomogeneous electric field under conditions of runaway electron generation

Dmitry Beloplotov et al.

Summary: The development of positive and negative streamers in a point-to-plane gap filled with air and nitrogen at various pressures and voltages was studied. The electrical parameters were measured with high resolution using a four-channel intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) and a streak-camera. The study found that high voltages or negative polarity result in the formation of large-diameter streamers both in nitrogen and air in the entire pressure range. The generation of runaway electrons (REs) near the pointed cathode and the simultaneous ionization of the gas in the final stage of streamer development were also observed.

Effect of photoionisation on initial discharge in air under nanosecond pulse voltage

Yutai Li et al.

Summary: The effects of photoionisation on the development and electron runaway of the initial discharge in atmospheric air under nanosecond pulse voltage were studied. It was found that photoionisation has little effect at the beginning of the initial discharge, but has greater impacts on the morphology of discharge as it develops. It does not have a decisive effect on the growth trend of the highest energy of runaway electrons, but does affect the change rate of the highest energy and overall distribution of electron energy.

Is an extended barrier-free discharge under nanosecond-pulse excitation really diffuse?

Chenhua Ren et al.

Summary: Nanosecond-pulsed high-voltage excitation is a promising method for achieving homogeneous discharge at atmospheric pressure. By using a knife-plate geometry, a diffuse plasma sheet with a gap distance of 1 cm and a length of 12 cm is generated. However, it is revealed that the discharge actually consists of multiple individual streamers, indicating an intermediate state between corona and spark.

Non-premixed counterflow methane flames in DC/AC/NS electric fields

Yong Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of counterflow diffusion flames to sub-breakdown DC and AC electric fields, as well as their superposition with ns pulse discharge waveforms in the plane-to-plane electrode geometry. The results show that sub-breakdown DC and low-frequency AC electric fields displace the flame towards the grounded electrode. However, as the AC frequency increases, the flame response becomes less pronounced. Combining a nanosecond pulse discharge with a sub-breakdown DC field generates a diffuse plasma across the entire gap. The rapid plasma self-shielding in the plane-to-plane geometry prevents the detectable flame displacement enhancement observed in other electrode geometries.

Observation of electron runaway in a tip-plane air gap under negative nanosecond pulse voltage by PIC/MCC simulation

Yutai Li et al.

Summary: The initial stage of gas breakdown with the generation of runaway electrons was investigated. It was found that at high voltages, runaway electrons can lead to rapid gas breakdown. The behavior of energetic electrons varies depending on the voltage. Pre-ionization of gas by runaway electrons may play an important role in fast gas breakdown under nanosecond short pulses.

Guiding effect of runaway electrons in atmospheric pressure nanosecond pulsed discharge: mode transition from diffuse discharge to streamer

Bangdou Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of runaway electrons during the pulsed breakdown in the atmosphere. It is found that the current amplitude of runaway electrons drastically decreases with the voltage amplitude and that the peak electric field at the front of the ionization wave plays a key role in maintaining the runaway state. Experimental observations and simulations explain the transition from diffuse discharge to streamer and the non-uniformity of discharge.

Gas lasers pumped by runaway electrons preionized diffuse discharge

Alexei N. Panchenko et al.

Summary: This paper reviews gas lasers pumped by runaway electrons preionized diffuse discharge (REP DD). It describes the conditions under which the discharge occurs and how a stable diffuse discharge is ignited in the presence of non-uniform electric field strength distribution. The plasma generated by REP DD can remain diffuse and provide preionization of laser gas mixtures. Experimental and simulated characteristics of REP DD plasma in various gaseous media are presented.

Summary: This paper focuses on the initiation and formation of negative streamer discharge, as well as the generation of runaway electrons. By conducting experiments with nanosecond voltage pulses, measurements of voltage, discharge current, and dynamic displacement current were taken to gather data on the dynamics of runaway electron generation in relation to streamer formation.

Reconstruction of energy spectrum of runaway electrons in nanosecond-pulse discharges in atmospheric air

Jintao Qiu et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation on the runaway electron spectrum showed that at atmospheric pressure and with gap spacing of 5 mm, applied voltages of 70-130 kV, the number of runaway electrons can reach the level of billions. The rough surface cathode creates a more inhomogeneous electric field and larger emission site for the runaway electrons around the cathode.
