A. I. Saifutdinov et al.

Summary: Numerical calculations were conducted to study a hybrid model of the near-cathode plasma in a newly developed PLES detector for gas chromatography. The results demonstrate the formation of narrow peaks, which represent the spectra of fast electrons generated by Penning ionization from helium impurities like Ar, N-2, O-2, and CO2.

Experiment and simulation on the micro-hollow cathode sustained discharge in helium with different geometries of the second anode

Shoujie He et al.

Summary: This study experimentally and numerically investigated the effects of a second anode with different geometries on the micro-hollow cathode sustained discharge (MCSD) in helium. The results showed that using needles inserted into the plate as the second anode promoted the formation of MCSD and allowed for MCSD at a low cathode current. The distribution of needles also had a significant impact on MCSD formation.

Numerical simulation on the characteristics of a micro-hollow cathode discharge with external surface of the cathode covered by a dielectric layer

Pengying Jia et al.

Summary: In this paper, a numerical simulation was conducted to study the discharge process of a MHCD with the cathode outer surface covered by a dielectric layer at atmospheric pressure. The results showed that the covered MHCD undergoes three phases before reaching a steady state. It was found that the covered MHCD has a higher averaged electron density in the steady state. These findings are important for generating atmospheric pressure plasmas with high electron density.

A. I. Saifutdinov et al.

Summary: In this study, we improved the probe system for plasma diagnostics that we previously developed for plasma polymerization and synthesis of carbon nanostructures. The probe system was supplemented with a module for probe cleaning using ion current and obtaining the second derivative of the probe current-voltage characteristic using the harmonic method. The probe system was tested by performing plasma diagnostics in a mixture of He + 0.1% CH4.

Investigation of Kinetics of Fast Electrons and Parameters of Negative-Glow Plasma in a Low-Pressure Glow Discharge in Helium

A. I. Saifutdinov et al.

Summary: The kinetics of fast electrons and parameters of negative-glow plasma in low-pressure glow discharge in helium were investigated numerically. It was found that the electron temperature in the negative-glow region is relatively low, around a few tenths of an electronvolt. Narrow peaks in the electron distribution function and the dependence of the differential flux on energy were observed in the numerical simulation, which is attributed to fast electrons formed in the reactions of Penning ionization. The results of the simulation were confirmed by probe diagnostics of the plasma. It was also demonstrated that the concentration of excited helium atoms in the negative-glow plasma can be determined by detecting fast electrons created as a result of Penning ionization reactions.

A self-consistent hybrid model of kinetic striations in low-current argon discharges

Vladimir Kolobov et al.

Summary: A self-consistent hybrid model of standing and moving striations in low-current DC discharges in noble gases was developed. Surface diffusion in phase space was introduced to describe the dynamics of electrons, and the formation of standing and moving striations was studied using numerical solutions. The model helps clarify the nature of these striations in DC discharges at low currents and pressures.

On the use of ultra-high resolution PIC methods to unveil microscale effects of plasma kinetic instabilities: electron trapping and release by electrostatic tidal effect

L. Schiesko et al.

Summary: Using a particle-in-cell coupled to Monte-Carlo collisions model, researchers have discovered microscale instabilities in non-equilibrium plasmas that fulfill Penrose's instability criterion. These instabilities result from the spontaneous development of ion turbulence generated by charge exchange collisions, leading to modulations of the local electric field. The modulation of the electric field traps low energy electrons and transports them from the plasma volume to the sheath vicinity. A electrostatic tidal effect near the sheath then releases the trapped electrons as a monochromatic bunch, accelerating them back towards the source. This instability provides a theoretical explanation for the anomalous enrichment of low-energy electrons observed in similar conditions. The findings emphasize the need for a more comprehensive understanding of microscale instabilities in non-equilibrium low temperature plasmas.

Effect of voltage pulse duration on electrophysical and thermal characteristics of cold atmospheric plasma jet

I. Schweigert et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of a cold atmospheric plasma jet (CAPJ) generated with positive pulsed (PP) voltage for medical applications. By changing the pulse duration, the intensity of plasma-target interaction and heating in the contact zone can be precisely controlled. The experiments show that the CAPJ excited with PP voltage has lower heating compared to AC voltage. The efficacy of treatment is validated through testing on cancer cells.

Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma as a powerful tool for the synthesis of rhenium-based nanostructures for the catalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol

Piotr Cyganowski et al.

Summary: This study introduced a new method for synthesizing Re nanostructures with defined optical, structural, and catalytic properties using a reaction-discharge system that operates in a high-throughput mode. The method involved the use of direct current atmospheric pressure glow discharge (dc-APGD) as a non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma source to reduce Re(vii) ions and form Re nanostructures through plasma-liquid interactions. The synthesized Re-based nanoparticles were characterized by UV/Vis absorption spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area X-ray diffraction (SAED), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and were used in the catalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with high efficiency.
