Analysis of the ECH effect on EPM/AE stability in Heliotron J plasma using a Landau closure model

J. Varela et al.

Summary: The effect of electron cyclotron heating (ECH) on the stability of Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particle modes (EPMs) triggered by energetic ions in Heliotron J plasma was analyzed in this study. The analysis used the FAR3d code to simulate a reduced MHD model for the thermal plasma coupled with a gyrofluid model for the energetic particle species. The simulations reproduced the observed stability trends of AE/EPM as electron temperature (T-e) increased, modifying various parameters.

Study of Alfven eigenmode stability in Quasi-Poloidal Stellarator (QPS) plasma using a Landau closure model

J. Ortiz et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to analyze the linear stability of Alfven eigenmodes (AE) in the QPS device heated by a tangential neutral beam injector (NBI). The analysis is performed for different operational regimes of the NBI, including EP beta, EP energy, and radial location of the beam. The stability of AE is improved in simulations with finite beta equilibria and three period configurations.

Overview of the TJ-II stellarator research programme towards model validation in fusion plasmas

C. Hidalgo et al.

Summary: This article reports on TJ-II stellarator research, including modelling and validation of plasma flow asymmetries, plasma fuelling physics, control and stability of Alfven eigenmodes (AEs), the interplay between turbulence and neoclassical mechanisms, and liquid metal behavior. Experimental validation of neoclassically predicted potential asymmetries impacting the radial electric field has been achieved. Research indicates that turbulence and fluctuations are strongly affected during particle injection processes. Advanced analysis tools show that radial electric fields not only affect turbulence correlation length but also reduce turbulence propagation from the edge to the scrape-off layer.

Recent results from deuterium experiments on the large helical device and their contribution to fusion reactor development

Masaki Osakabe et al.

Summary: In recent deuterium experiments on the large helical device (LHD), we have explored techniques to increase the electron and ion temperatures in plasmas. We observed important phenomena such as the isotope effect in the formation of internal transport barrier and the simultaneous formation of edge transport barrier and divertor detachment. Additionally, the contributions of negative-ion based neutral beam injector research and tritium mass balance study to fusion reactor development are discussed.

Summary: The aim of this study is to analyze the stability of Alfven eigenmodes in the CFETR plasma for steady state operations. The study shows that the location of the internal transport barrier and the inclusion of multiple energetic particle populations and finite Larmor radius damping effects can affect the stability of the plasma.

Simulation of the TAEs' saturation phase in the Large Helical Device: MHD burst

J. Varela et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to analyze the saturation regime of the toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAE) in the Large Helical Device plasma, especially the MHD burst. The study uses numerical simulations to show that different modes of TAE can interact and become unstable, leading to MHD burst and significant effects on plasma properties.

Study of the Alfven eigenmodes stability in CFQS plasma using a Landau closure model

J. Varela et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the stability of Alfven eigenmodes in the Chinese First Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarator. Simulation results show that different types of AEs become unstable due to the slowing down process of EP, with the energy level of EP affecting the stability. Increase in thermal plasma density improves AE stability in the plasma.

Global linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic modelling of Alfven eigenmodes in ITER

T. Hayward-Schneider et al.

Summary: Linear and nonlinear modelling of Alfvenic instabilities, particularly toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs), show that odd-parity TAEs are driven by alpha particles, while low mode number TAEs require global treatment. Multi-mode simulations predict that enhanced saturation and significant EP redistribution will occur with double the nominal EP density.

Effects of negative triangularity shaping on energetic particle driven Alfven eigenmodes in DIII-D *

Y. Ghai et al.

Summary: The study compares the effects of positive and negative triangularity shapes on tokamak performance and AE activity, finding that unstable AEs in the negative triangularity case have lower growth rates, which may help reduce fast ion losses.

Visualization of Fast Ion Phase-Space Flow Driven by Alfven Instabilities

X. D. Du et al.

Summary: In the DIII-D tokamak, fast ion phase-space flow driven by Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) exhibits different trajectories in different regions and is influenced by energy. The flow trajectories in phase space align with the intersection lines of constant magnetic moment and constant E-(omega/n)P-zeta surfaces, indicating large-scale phase-space transport of fast ions at those points. This destructive flow behavior of fast ions is consistent with nonlinear hybrid kinetic-magnetohydrodynamics simulation, where ions transition between different flow trajectories for phase-space transport.

Investigation of Alfven eigenmodes and energetic particle modes in EAST with neutral beam injection

Liqing Xu et al.

Summary: Observations in EAST neutral beam injection plasma with heavy tungsten impurity show the existence of Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particle modes (EPMs). A transition from EPMs to AEs is found, with EPMs exhibiting frequency chirping down feature and AEs displaying constant frequencies or chirping up. Hybrid simulations using M3D-K code reveal the nonlinear evolution of EPM frequencies and the self-consistent dynamic of the transition from EPMs to AEs due to the expel of energetic ions.

Stability analysis of TJ-II stellarator NBI driven Alfven eigenmodes in ECRH and ECCD experiments

A. Cappa et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the impact of electron cyclotron resonance heating and electron cyclotron current drive on Alfvenic instabilities in the TJ-II stellarator caused by neutral beam injection. An MHD stability analysis is carried out to compare with experimental data, showing that the predicted modes coincide with the observed fluctuations. Despite uncertainties, the code predictions agree reasonably well with experimental results.

Theoretical analysis of the saturation phase of the 1/1 energetic-ion-driven resistive interchange mode

J. Varela et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the saturation regime of the energetic ion-driven resistive interchange mode in LHD plasma. Nonlinear simulations were conducted to reproduce the experimental observations of 1/1 EIC saturation phases, showing enhancement of the resistive interchange modes as EP beta increases and triggering burst events. The study also revealed inward propagation and stabilization phases of the 1/1 EIC due to the nonlinear destabilization of energetic particle modes.

Experimental observation of the geodesic acoustic frequency limit for the NBI-driven Alfven eigenmodes in TJ-II

L. G. Eliseev et al.

Summary: This study focuses on Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) in the TJ-II heliac with hydrogen plasmas heated by a hydrogen co-field neutral beam injector. The observations show significant variations in AE frequency under changing plasma current, with a spatial location and internal amplitudes of the modes determined by an advanced heavy-ion beam probe diagnostic. Linear MHD modeling using STELLGAP and FAR3D codes replicates the observed frequency evolution, with radial profile peaks near the outer edge.
