Morphological Evolution of Gold Nanoparticles Synthesized via Solution Plasma Sputtering: Effect of Sodium Chloride Concentration and Storage Time

Jidapa Chantaramethakul et al.

Summary: Morphological control of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) synthesized via solution plasma sputtering (SPS) in sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions has been investigated. The size, distribution, and stability of AuNPs were examined over 30 days of storage. The results show that the NaCl concentration and storage time critically influence the morphological evolution and stability of AuNPs. High NaCl concentration leads to coalescence and sedimentation of AuNPs. Additionally, oxidative etching affects the size and distribution of AuNPs, with larger particles observed at higher NaCl concentrations.

The Electrophysical Characteristics of Underwater Impulse Discharge Plasma in the Processes of Creating Multifunctional Composites

Nikolay Sirotkin et al.

Summary: Underwater impulse plasma is used to produce polymer nanocomposites containing metal oxide nanoparticles in one step. The electrode sputtering rate and particle phase composition depend on the medium, either water or polymer solution. The stages of underwater impulse discharge formation were discussed, and discharge parameters such as current density, plasma field strength, and electron drift velocities were determined. Energy distribution channels in underwater impulse discharge were analyzed, revealing that about half of the input energy is used for heating the solution. These findings can be employed in developing technological foundations for industrial synthesis of polymer nanocomposites using pulsed underwater discharges.

Synthesis of antibacterial hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and silver nanoparticle biocomposites via solution plasma using silver electrodes

Yu-Been Ko et al.

Summary: Biocomposites of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized through the solution plasma process (SPP). The synthesized biocomposites exhibited a peak near 400 nm in UV-Vis spectroscopy, which increased with the concentration of HPMC and discharge time. TEM and SEM/EDS analyses revealed well-dispersed spherical AgNPs with sizes ranging from 2-18 nm in porous HPMC matrices. TGA analysis confirmed the thermo-stability of the biocomposites. The HPMC/AgNPs biocomposites showed inhibition zones ranging from 8-14.3 mm against bacterial growth, with minimum inhibition concentrations of 10-15 μg/mL for Gram-negative bacteria and 25-30 μg/mL for Gram-positive bacteria. The biocomposites were non-toxic to HEK293 cells up to a concentration of 125 μg/mL. These findings suggest that the synthesis of antibacterial agents using silver electrodes in the HPMC matrix via SPP can be an efficient and safe method for developing biopolymer-based antimicrobials and wound healing biomaterials.

Synthesis of Graphite-Encapsulated Ni Micro- and Nanoparticles Using Liquid-Phase Arc Discharge

Marzhan N. N. Ualkhanova et al.

Summary: In this work, nickel particles encapsulated in a few-layer graphene shell were synthesized using electric arc discharge in three different liquid media: deionized water, alcohol, and toluene. Raman studies, X-ray diffraction analysis, and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the formation of spherical nickel particles encapsulated in all liquid media. It was found that using toluene as a cooling medium increased the number of particles with a graphite shell and allowed the formation of micro- and nanoparticles covered with monolayer graphene. Toluene, which lacks oxygen and has a basic hexagonal carbon structure, is a favorable medium for the synthesis of metal particles covered with a graphene shell.
