Kinetic Study for Plasma Assisted Cracking of NH3: Approaches and Challenges

Seunghwan Bang et al.

Summary: Ammonia is considered a promising hydrogen carrier for a sustainable world. Plasma assisted decomposition of NH3 offers a cost-effective and energy-efficient method for on-demand cracking of NH3 into H2 at low temperatures. This study investigates the role of electron-induced and thermally induced reactions in the decomposition of NH3.

Dry reforming in a dielectric barrier discharge reactor with non-uniform discharge gap: Effects of metal rings on the discharge behavior and performance

Jinxin Wang et al.

Summary: The performance of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactors in environmental and energy processes is limited due to their low energy yield. In this study, stainless steel rings were placed on the inner electrode rod of the DBD reactor to change the discharge gap and electric field, resulting in improved dry reforming performance. At 50 W supplied power, the rings negatively impacted the performance due to non-uniform discharge distribution. However, at 30 W supplied power, the rings improved the performance, and more rings with a larger diameter further enhanced it. The presence of rings increased the local electric field, displaced charge, discharge fraction, stability, and selectivity to syngas.

Ammonia decomposition in a dielectric barrier discharge plasma: Insights from experiments and kinetic modeling

J. A. Andersen et al.

Summary: The use of ammonia as a storage medium for hydrogen and its plasma-catalytic decomposition for retrieval of hydrogen are investigated. Experimental results show that increasing the specific energy input enhances the ammonia conversion. A kinetic model is used to analyze the decomposition mechanism, indicating that the collisions between NH3 and high-energy electrons initiate the decomposition.

Kinetic study of plasma assisted oxidation of H2 for an undiluted lean mixture

Ramses Snoeckx et al.

Summary: For the past couple of decades, research on electrical discharges (or plasmas) has been conducted to advance combustion and fuel reforming. The focus has been on nonthermal plasma, which has shown potential in improving ignition characteristics, flame stability, and hydrocarbon reforming. However, due to the complex physicochemical nature of nonthermal plasma, many experimental findings remain unexplained. Recently, plasma-chemical kinetic studies have been initiated to understand the role of plasma chemistry in hydrocarbon chemistry, including combustion phenomena. More research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms and predict experimental outcomes.

A critical review on ozone and co-species, generation and reaction mechanisms in plasma induced by dielectric barrier discharge technologies for wastewater remediation

Emile Salomon Massima Mouele et al.

Summary: The development of cost-effective, feasible, and advanced wastewater treatment techniques are crucial for the availability and sustainability of scarce water resources. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on non thermal plasma processes like dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) have shown promise in combating biologically recalcitrant organic substances in water and wastewater streams by generating in-situ UV light and reactive oxygen species. Optimization of catalyst additives and critical parameters such as pH in DBD methods can efficiently promote the decomposition and mineralization of water toxins. Double cylindrical DBD designs have been highlighted as superior to single cylindrical and conventional DBDs.
