Improving weld penetration by two-TIG arc activated via mixing oxygen into shielding gas

Jia Zhang et al.

Summary: To improve the welding efficiency of traditional TIG welding, a new activating TIG (A-TIG) welding process, called activating arc two-TIG (AT-TIG) welding, was developed by introducing a small amount of oxygen into the shielding gas. The effects of oxygen flow rate, welding current, and welding speed on the weld formation of SUS304 stainless steel were investigated. It was found that this method can achieve deeper weld penetration at higher welding speeds. The addition of oxygen to the shielding gas did not significantly affect the weld metal microstructure. The oxygen transfer process from the arc plasma to the weld pool and the mechanisms for enhancing weld penetration in this welding process were clarified.

Spectroscopic analysis of the arc plasma during activating flux tungsten inert gas welding process

Chunkai Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial distribution of A-TIG welding arc spectra under the influence of three types of active agents. The distribution characteristics of active agent particles, argon, and iron particles in the arc were analyzed, and the arc electron temperature was calculated. Experimental results show that the distribution state of different active particles in the arc is different, and the influence of different active agents on the arc electron temperature varies.

Modelling and measurements of gas tungsten arc welding in argon-helium mixtures with metal vapour

Junting Xiang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of argon-helium mixtures in gas tungsten arc welding of an iron workpiece using a computational model. It was found that a transition from a helium-like to an argon-like arc occurs when the argon mole fraction exceeds about 0.3. Adding helium to argon altered arc properties and affected weld geometry, while iron vapor cooled the arc for all argon-helium mixtures. Emission spectroscopy measurements showed good agreement with the model's predictions.
