Alleviation of Associated Drought and Salinity Stress' Detrimental Impacts on an Eggplant Cultivar ('Bonica F1') by Adding Biochar

Sami Hannachi et al.

Summary: A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of biochar on eggplant growth, physiology, and yield parameters under separate and associated drought and salt stress. The results showed that associated drought and salt stress had a greater negative impact on eggplant performance compared to single drought or salt stress. However, the addition of biochar improved the ability of eggplants to alleviate the effects of salt and drought stress. In particular, the combination of biochar and alternate root-zone drying irrigation significantly increased plant growth and yield traits under salinity.

Improving the Antioxidants System, Growth, and Sugar Beet Quality Subjected to Long-Term Osmotic Stress by Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria and Compost Tea

Hany S. Osman et al.

Summary: Water stress and soil salinity constrain crop productivity. Applied beneficial microbes and natural extracts are considered new effective strategies for plant adaptation under abiotic stress. Treatments of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and compost tea (CT) demonstrated positive effects on growth and sugar quality of sugar beet plants, with CT showing more effectiveness in enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity and soluble sugar content compared to PSB. Combined treatment of PSB + CT under moderate drought conditions showed reduced levels of glycine betaine (GB) and proline, while enhancing the antioxidant system, relative water content (RWC), relative membrane stability index (RMSI), stomatal conductance (gs), chlorophyll, TSS, total leaves area, root length, root diameter, root yield, sugar yield, and quality.
