Deficient copper availability on organoleptic and nutritional quality of tomato fruit

Maria Teresa Lafuente et al.

Summary: Copper deficiency affects the micronutrient contents and nutritional value of tomato fruits. Lower copper levels and changes in other micronutrients occurred in response to Cu deficiency during fruit ripening stages, leading to delayed color change and increased acidity in the fruits. Cu deficiency also increased antioxidant capacity and vitamin C content, as well as total phenolic and flavonoid contents in green fruits.

Cytokinins are involved in regulation of tomato pericarp thickness and fruit size

Lijun Gan et al.

Summary: This study provides genetic evidence that endogenous cytokinins (CKs) play a role in pericarp growth and fruit size regulation in tomatoes. Overexpression of the CK-inactivating enzyme gene AtCKX2 led to reduced pericarp thickness and smaller fruit size, primarily due to decreased cell division. Transcriptome profiling also revealed changes in gene expression involved in cell division, expansion, and hormone signaling pathways. These findings highlight the importance of CKs in regulating pericarp development and fruit size in tomatoes.

ABA regulation of root growth during soil drying and recovery can involve auxin response

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that ABA plays a crucial role in regulating root growth of tomato plants under drought stress. Wild-type plants showed increased primary root growth during moderate drying, maintained more lateral roots and longer primary and total root length under severe drying, and produced more roots after re-watering. RNA-Seq analysis indicated different expression patterns of auxin-related genes in roots between wild-type and ABA-deficient plants under drying or re-watering conditions, suggesting ABA regulation of tomato root growth may involve auxin response.

Both Zn biofortification and nutrient distribution pattern in cherry tomato plants are influenced by the application of ZnO nanofertilizer

Patricia Almendros et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nanofertilizer on nutrient uptake and distribution in cherry tomato plants. The results showed that the application of ZnO-NPs can increase crop yield and achieve adequate zinc biofortification. However, the calcium concentration in the calcareous soil was insufficient.

Response of yield and quality of greenhouse tomatoes to water and salt stresses and biochar addition in Northwest China

Zhuqing Wu et al.

Summary: Improving productivity of saline soils under drought condition is critical for sustainable agricultural development in arid areas. This study examined the effects of water, salinity, and biochar addition on tomato yield and quality, and found that biochar addition reduced yield and irrigation water productivity while increasing certain quality parameters. Lower irrigation levels and higher salinity generally led to higher yield and irrigation water productivity.

Molecular framework integrating nitrate sensing in root and auxin-guided shoot adaptive responses

Rashed Abualia et al.

Summary: Plant mineral nutrition, especially nitrate uptake, plays a crucial role in plant growth and development. Roots act as a key regulator in coordinating the growth and development of plant organs in response to nitrate availability, through a complex regulatory mechanism involving cytokinin response factors and auxin transporters.

Osmotic adjustment of tomato under mild soil salinity can enhance drought resistance

Xianbo Zhang et al.

Summary: Osmotic adjustment is an important mechanism for plants to withstand osmotic stress, and the accumulation of Na+ can enhance this ability. This study found that soil salinity enhances osmotic adjustment and has a smaller aggravating effect on osmotic stress under combined water and salt stress. Within a certain range, Na+ concentration has little effect on K+ concentration, and mild to moderate water deficit does not lead to further oxidative damage.

Abscisic acid and its role in the modulation of plant growth, development, and yield stability

Polavarapu B. Kavi Kishor et al.

Summary: Abscisic acid (ABA) has a dual role in plant growth and stress tolerance, promoting growth at basal levels but impairing growth at elevated levels. This review discusses novel discoveries related to ABA fluxes and signaling responses, as well as their impact on yield stability in cereal crops. ABA homeostasis is implicated in drought stress and affects productive tillers, grain number determination, and seed development. Emerging knowledge from model plant systems is also considered.

Cytokinin biosynthesis and transport for systemic nitrogen signaling

Hitoshi Sakakibara

Summary: Plants exhibit plasticity in growth and development in response to environmental changes, with cytokinins playing a crucial role in long-distance communication between organs for systemic growth regulation in response to nitrogen. The spatial distribution of cytokinin biosynthesis genes determines the structural differences in molecular species transported through xylem and phloem, with root-borne trans-hydroxylated cytokinins regulating shoot growth effectively.

On-farm reduced irrigation and fertilizer doses, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal inoculation improve water productivity in tomato production

Carmen Biel et al.

Summary: The viability of horticultural production relies on high yields of high-value products and efficient use of inputs like fertilizer and water. Microbial resources, such as Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF), play a crucial role in increasing yield, reducing inputs, and improving product quality. Several experiments demonstrated that AMF inoculation and optimized water and fertilizer management can enhance tomato yield and quality.

Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Symbiosis Enhances Water Status and Soil-Plant Hydraulic Conductance Under Drought

Mohanned Abdalla et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Fungi (AMF) play a crucial role in maintaining plant water status and soil-plant hydraulic conductance under drought conditions. By extending the effective root radius, AMF reduce water fluxes at the root-soil interface, ultimately enhancing plant resilience to soil drying.
