Silicon modification improves biochar?s ability to mitigate cadmium toxicity in tomato by enhancing root colonization of plant-beneficial bacteria

Xue Jin et al.

Summary: Modification of biochar, especially with Si, enhances its ability to mitigate cadmium toxicity in tomato by altering physico-chemical properties and promoting beneficial bacteria in the rhizosphere microbiome. The Si-modified biochar contains higher Si content and increases plant-available Si in the soil. Changes in rhizosphere microbiome caused by biochar amendments contribute to the mitigation of cadmium toxicity. Both biochars, particularly the Si-modified biochar, promote specific beneficial bacterial taxa and stimulate tomato to recruit plant-beneficial bacteria.

Improving plant available water holding capacity of soil by solid and chemically modified biochars

Kazem Ghassemi-Golezani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of solid biochar and chemically modified biochars on water retention in a silty loam soil. The results showed that chemically modified biochars, especially biochar-based nanocomposites of magnesium and manganese and H3PO4 modified biochar, had a better effect on improving water holding capacity by decreasing saturated hydraulic conductivity in the soil.

Ameliorative Effects of Biochar for Cadmium Stress on Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Growth

Esin Dadasoglu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the morphological and biochemical changes of bean plants in response to biochar treatment under cadmium stress. The results showed that biochar treatment effectively improved the tolerance of bean seedlings to cadmium and reduced oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme activity, as well as the decrease in nutrient element content in bean plants.

Biochar/vermicompost promotes Hybrid Pennisetum plant growth and soil in saline soils

Xiliang Song et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of biochar and vermicompost on soil enzyme activity and the growth, yield, and quality of Hybrid Pennisetum plants under moderate salt stress. The results showed that biochar and/or vermicompost improved plant performance by promoting Na+ exclusion, K+ accumulation, stomatal regulation, and enhancing various physiological and biochemical processes. Furthermore, the addition of vermicompost showed better results compared to biochar alone or the biochar-compost combination, indicating its effectiveness in reclaiming salt-affected soils.

Boron-mediated lignin metabolism in response to aluminum toxicity in citrus (Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.) root

Lei Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between boron (B) and aluminum (Al) on cell wall structure and lignin-related metabolic pathway in trifoliate orange seedlings. The results showed that B supply decreased Al content in the root, especially in the cell wall, and reduced Al-induced damage. Boron application also decreased the levels of hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and lignin in Al-treated roots, as well as inhibited the activities of lignin biosynthesis-related enzymes. These findings suggest that B can alleviate Al toxicity by reducing Al accumulation, lignin biosynthesis, and cell wall thickness, thereby promoting root elongation.

Biochar-based metal oxide nanocomposites of magnesium and manganese improved root development and productivity of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) under salt stress

Kazem Ghassemi-Golezani et al.

Summary: Biochar-based metal oxide nanocomposites (BNCs) have shown significant potential in enhancing the growth and productivity of safflower plants under salt stress conditions. The application of BNCs not only improved the root and shoot growth of safflower, but also positively affected the soil pH and cation exchange capacity.

Performance of biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron for cadmium and arsenic co-contaminated soil remediation: Insights on availability, bioaccumulation and health risk

Dong Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed a biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI-BC) for the simultaneous stabilization of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in co-contaminated soil, showing a significant decrease in the availability of Cd and As in soil and their bioaccumulation in vegetables. The application of nZVI-BC effectively decreased the cancer risks related to vegetable consumption by inhibiting the bioaccumulation of Cd and As in vegetables, highlighting its potential as a promising remediation amendment for co-contaminated farmland soil.

Changes in soil properties and salt tolerance of safflower in response to biochar-based metal oxide nanocomposites of magnesium and manganese

Salar Farhangi-Abriz et al.

Summary: Solid biochar and biochar-based nanocomposites significantly improved soil properties and salt tolerance of safflower plants. They increased soil pH and cation exchange capacity, enhanced nutrient uptake, water use efficiency, and plant growth, while reducing sodium uptake, osmotic stress, and salt toxicity under saline conditions. Biochar and BNCs proved to be effective in enriching plant cells with nutrients and maintaining optimal water content for improved plant growth under salt stress.
