Agronomic Biofortification of Wheat Through Proper Fertilizer Management to Alleviate Zinc Malnutrition: A Review

Arvind K. Yadav et al.

Summary: Zinc deficiency poses a global threat to human health, particularly due to the reliance on zinc-poor cereal-based diets. Wheat, as a staple grain, is consumed by a considerable portion of the global population. However, the zinc concentration in wheat grain falls short of the requirement for human health, highlighting the need for biofortification. Agronomic biofortification, through fertilizer management and foliar application, can increase the zinc concentration in wheat grain and improve its bioavailability. However, there are challenges in enhancing zinc accumulation and transportation during grain filling. Biofortification of zinc in wheat should be studied using distinct biomarkers to assess its efficacy.

Efficient nutrient management for enhancing crop productivity, quality and nutrient dynamics in lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) in the semi-arid region of northern India

Sandeep Kumar et al.

Summary: Various faulty farming practices and low-performance cultivars selection are reducing crop yields, factor productivity, and soil fertility. Therefore, efficient nutrient management and selecting nutrient-responsive cultivars are needed to achieve better productivity, seed quality, nutrient efficiency, and soil nutrient dynamics. The study showed that the lentil cultivar HM-1 performed significantly better than Sapna and Garima in terms of seed yield and nutrient uptake, as well as partial factor productivity, partial nutrient balance, and internal utilisation efficiency. It was found that 50% of the recommended fertilizer dose could be substituted with organic manures without compromising crop productivity and soil fertility when growing the HM-1 cultivar, thereby sustaining soil-human-environment health.

Effects of Sequential and Tank Mix Applications of Zinc, Iron and Nitrogen on Symbiotic Parameters, Productivity and Economics of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Under Field Conditions

Vajinder Pal et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of individual and tank mix applications of zinc, iron, and nitrogen on symbiotic parameters, productivity, and economics of chickpea. The results showed that both sequential and tank mix applications improved nodule number, nodule dry weight, leghaemoglobin content, chlorophyll content, and grain yield. However, tank mix application of the three nutrients resulted in higher net returns and benefit-cost ratio. Therefore, tank mix application of zinc, iron, and urea can increase the productivity and economic returns of chickpea.

Exogenous zinc mitigates salinity stress by stimulating proline metabolism in proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.)

Naveed Ul Ul Mushtaq et al.

Summary: Salinity is a major ecological restriction for plant growth and poses a threat to global agriculture. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated under stress conditions can damage cellular components, but low levels of ROS also play a role as signaling molecules. Plants have antioxidant systems and proline metabolism to protect cells from damage. The application of zinc can mitigate the negative effects of salt and improve plant growth and development.
