A Novel Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton Cell-Derived Phytocomplex Regulates Keratinocytes Inflammatory Cascade and Barrier Function and Preserves Vaginal Mucosal Integrity In Vivo

Giovanna Pressi et al.

Summary: In recent years, the medicinal plant Perilla frutescens has attracted scientific interest due to its potential anti-allergic and skin protective properties. However, the lack of standardized extracts has hindered its clinical applications. This study developed a standardized phytocomplex of P. frutescens enriched in rosmarinic acid and polyphenols using innovative cell culture biotechnology and evaluated its efficacy in inflammatory models and vaginal mucosal integrity. The results demonstrated that the P. frutescens phytocomplex had significant effects on epidermal barrier maintenance, anti-inflammatory activity, and preservation of vaginal mucosal integrity, suggesting its potential as an innovative ingredient for dermatological applications.

Growth patterns and biological activities of Pelargonium sidoides DC. hairy root cultures: A commercially-feasible industrial scale-up to improve yields

Zeynab Yousefian et al.

Summary: Pelargonium sidoides DC. (Geraniaceae), a perennial herb from South Africa, has medicinal coumarins in its roots with confirmed anti-viral properties. In this study, transgenic hairy root lines (HRLs) of P. sidoides were created using Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Hairy root cultures (HRCs) were treated with subculture cycles and analyzed for biological and antioxidant activities. HRL4 showed the highest content of total phenols and total flavonoids. The HRC extracts had antioxidant activity and the ability to scavenge DPPH radicals and bleach beta-carotene/linoleic acid. The antioxidant activity was positively correlated with total flavonoid content.

Effect of Biotic Elicitors on the Growth, Antioxidant Activity and Metabolites Accumulation in In Vitro Propagated Shoots of Pueraria tuberosa

Bhanupriya Kanthaliya et al.

Summary: The present study evaluated the effects of different concentrations of biotic elicitors on the growth, antioxidant activity, and metabolite accumulation in in vitro propagated shoots of Pueraria tuberosa. The results showed that the elicitors significantly increased biomass and metabolite contents, with the best effect observed in cultures treated with 100 mg/L pectin. Furthermore, pectin treatment promoted the accumulation of isoflavonoids. Overall, the application of different biotic elicitors improved the growth and metabolite accumulation in P. tuberosa, providing potential phytopharmaceutical advantages in the future.

Biochemical and phytochemical responses of Ammi visnaga L. (Apiaceae) callus culture elicited by SiO2 and graphene Oxide-SiO2 nanoparticles

Pooran Golkar et al.

Summary: In this study, two types of nano-particles (SiO2 and GO-SiO2) were used as elicitors to investigate their effects on callus morphology, H2O2 content, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC), ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP), and antioxidant enzymes in the callus cultures of Ammi visnaga L. The results showed that the 15 mg L-1 concentration of GO-SiO2 NPs had the most significant impact on TPC, CAT, GPX, and APX, while the 25 mg L-1 concentration of SiO2 NPs had the most significant impact on H2O2, FRAP, and TFC.

Therapeutic Targets for Phenolic Compounds from Agro-industrial By-products against Obesity

Maria de la Luz Cadiz-Gurrea et al.

Summary: This review discusses the potential therapeutic targets for phenolic compounds from agro-industrial by-products against obesity. The study highlights the inhibitory effects of these compounds on enzymes related to lipid and glucose metabolism, as well as their modulation of biomarkers, genes, and gut microbiota in animal models. It suggests that these by-products could be revalorized to develop new high value products for the prevention or treatment of obesity and associated disorders, although further human studies are needed to determine optimal administration parameters.

Optimization of Callus and Cell Suspension Cultures of Lycium schweinfurthii for Improved Production of Phenolics, Flavonoids, and Antioxidant Activity

Diaa Mamdouh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the use of plant growth regulators 2,4-D and NAA in MS medium can induce callus formation in L. schweinfurthii, and the highest phenolic, flavonoid compounds, and antioxidant activity are observed at a concentration of 2 mg L-1 NAA. In addition, culturing cell suspension in N2 medium with 30 g L-1 sucrose results in the highest biomass. These findings are important for the production of secondary metabolites from callus and cell cultures of L. schweinfurthii.

Influence of different elicitors on BIA production in Macleaya cordata

Peng Huang et al.

Summary: The study focused on using elicitors such as methyl jasmonate (MJ) and salicylic acid (SA) to stimulate aseptic seedlings of Macleaya cordata, resulting in an increase in the contents of SAN and CHE. The best treatment was found to be using MJ alone, which led to a significant increase in SAN and CHE contents, while the combined treatment with wounding and MJ showed less effective results. High expression levels of SAN and CHE biosynthetic pathway genes were observed after MJ treatment, consistent with the accumulation of SAN and CHE. Additionally, changes in the content of synthetic intermediates of SAN and CHE were also studied.
