PDAT regulates PE as transient carbon sink alternative to triacylglycerol in Nannochloropsis

Juan Yang et al.

Summary: The oleaginous alga Nannochloropsis oceanica stores specific phosphatidyldiacylethanolamines for triacylglycerol production under stress. The NoPDAT pathway is parallel and independent of the NoDGAT pathway for oil production in N. oceanica. LU-PE can serve as an alternative carbon sink for photosynthetically assimilated carbon in N. oceanica when PDAT-mediated TAG biosynthesis is compromised or under stress in the presence of high CO2 levels.

An increase in the membrane lipids recycling by PDAT overexpression stimulates the accumulation of triacylglycerol in Nannochloropsis gaditana

Nicolo Fattore et al.

Summary: Oleaginous microalgae have the potential to be used as sustainable feedstocks for lipid production. This study focuses on the overexpression of the phospholipid: diacylglycerol acyltransferase (PDAT) gene in the seawater alga Nannochloropsis gaditana. The overexpression of PDAT led to increased TAG content in actively growing algae cultures but had no effect under conditions that naturally stimulate lipid accumulation. Results suggest that genetic modulation of the PDAT gene can be a promising strategy to increase lipid content in microalgae without negatively affecting biomass productivity.

Summary: The study identified PtDGAT1 as the most efficient gene for synthesizing TAG in the marine alga Phaeodactylum tricornutum. By overexpressing this gene, the engineered strain produced record-high levels of TAG and total lipids, making it a potential candidate for lipid production in biofuel applications.

Genome-wide analysis of allele-specific expression of genes in the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Antoine Hoguin et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in next generation sequencing have led to the discovery of widespread autosomal allele-specific expression in mammals and plants, with potential phenotypic effects. Studies on diatoms have found extensive allele-specific expression related to adaptation to external cues and natural hybridization, with different degrees of bias in allelic expression. Validation experiments show that genes with moderate allelic bias are less stable than genes with nearly complete monoallelic expression.
