Arabidopsis EXECUTER1 interacts with WRKY transcription factors to mediate plastid-to-nucleus singlet oxygen signaling

Yuhong Li et al.

Summary: Chloroplasts produce singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), which affects nuclear gene expression and plant fitness. In this study, mutations in the genes GUN4 and GUN5 were found to suppress the regulation of the photo-oxidative response in Arabidopsis thaliana. GUN4 and GUN5 interact with EX1 and EX2 in plastids, and this interaction is affected by RB or white light.

High intrinsic water use efficiency is underpinned by high stomatal aperture and guard cell potassium flux in C3 and C4 grasses grown at glacial CO2 and low light

Walter Krystler Israel et al.

Summary: The photosynthetic type of grasses affects their intrinsic water use efficiency. C-4 grasses have higher intrinsic water use efficiency and CO2 assimilation rates, and lower stomatal conductance and operational stomatal aperture. Stomatal size and density do not vary according to the photosynthetic type. Overall, intrinsic water use efficiency and stomatal conductance depend most on operational stomatal aperture and density of open stomata.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) as a selection criterion for triticale grain yield under drought stress: a comprehensive study on genomics and expression profiling, bioinformatics, heritability, and phenotypic variability

Armin Saed-Moucheshi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between enzymatic antioxidants and grain yield in triticale plants by evaluating the expression levels of SOD isozymes. A novel analytical method for distinguishing elite genotypes and a new programing based on SAS-language were introduced. Field experiments and bioinformatics results revealed SOD's significant role in triticale's resistance to drought stress, with Cu/Zn-SOD showing higher expression levels in tolerant genotypes.

Target enzymes are stabilized by AfrLEA6 and a gain of α-helix coincides with protection by a group 3 LEA protein during incremental drying

Blase M. LeBlanc et al.

Summary: LEA proteins, including recently discovered AfrLEA6 in animals, can protect enzymes like LDH, CS, and PFK from damage during desiccation. AfrLEA2, known for its exceptional ability to protect PFK, showed simultaneous gain of alpha-helix structure which coincided with increased protection of the target protein. This study provides experimental evidence linking gain of alpha-helix with stabilization of proteins under varying hydration states.

Dehydrin MsDHN1 improves aluminum tolerance of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) by affecting oxalate exudation from root tips

Aimin Lv et al.

Summary: The SK3-type dehydrin MsDHN1 was cloned from alfalfa, and its overexpression was found to increase plant growth rates under Al stress, while suppression resulted in decreased growth rates. MsDHN1 was shown to interact with aquaporins and its expression was regulated by the transcription factor MsABF2 through the ABA signaling pathway. This suggests that MsDHN1 plays a role in increasing alfalfa tolerance to Al stress by enhancing oxalate secretion from root tips.

Intrinsically disordered protein biosensor tracks the physical-chemical effects of osmotic stress on cells

Cesar L. Cuevas-Velazquez et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new FRET biosensor, SED1, developed using Arabidopsis intrinsically disordered AtLEA4-5 protein to monitor osmotic stress induced changes in cells. The biosensor demonstrates high sensitivity to osmolarity changes and shows near-linear responses in various living cells, offering a valuable tool for studying water-associated stress. The research highlights the potential of intrinsically disordered protein regions as environmentally-responsive molecular tools across different organisms.
