Deciphering molecular mechanisms regarding enhanced drought tolerance in plants by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: Soil drought is a significant abiotic stress that severely affects plant growth and physiological activities. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in the soil can enhance plant adaptability and tolerance to drought stress by establishing a symbiotic relationship with plant roots. Research on how AM fungi enhance host drought tolerance has focused on physiological mechanisms, with molecular mechanisms being less studied. However, recent experiments have increasingly explored the molecular mechanisms. This review examines the functional and regulatory genes involved in AM fungi-modulated drought tolerance and highlights their roles in physiological activities such as osmoregulation, water and nutrient transport, hormones, and signal transduction. It also discusses how mycorrhizal plants regulate plant drought tolerance through transcription factors and prospects for future research on the interaction of signal pathways in gene regulation of mycorrhizal plants.

Influence of drought stress and mycorrhizal (Funneliformis mosseae) symbiosis on growth parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidant activity, and essential oil composition of summer savory (Satureja hortensis L.) plants

Farzad Rasouli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) inoculation on the physiological and biochemical responses of summer savory plants under different irrigation regimes. The results showed that plants inoculated with AMF had better growth and physiological traits, as well as improved antioxidant enzyme activity and essential oil composition. Therefore, using AMF inoculation could be a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to enhance the adaptability of summer savory plants to water shortage conditions.

Chloroplast development in green plant tissues: the interplay between light, hormone, and transcriptional regulation

Lee Cackett et al.

Summary: Chloroplasts play a crucial role in photosynthesis and various biological processes including nitrogen and sulphur assimilation, amino acid, fatty acid, nucleotide and hormone synthesis. Light is essential for chloroplast formation and directly regulates the expression of chloroplast-related genes. Hormones such as brassinosteriods, cytokinins, auxins and gibberellins are also modulated by light and control chloroplast development during early stages of plant growth. Transcription factors, light signaling, and hormone signaling form a complex network regulating the transcription of chloroplast- and photosynthesis-related genes to control chloroplast development in green tissues.

Responses of Microstructure, Ultrastructure and Antioxidant Enzyme Activity to PEG-Induced Drought Stress in Cyclocarya paliurus Seedlings

Chenhui Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the drought adaptation and physiological response of Cyclocarya paliurus seedlings were investigated under different concentrations of PEG6000-induced drought. The results showed that drought treatment affected leaf anatomical characteristics and stomatal characteristics, and caused damage at the cellular level and chloroplast lysis. The activities of antioxidant enzymes were promoted, but insufficient to deal with membrane lipid peroxidative damage. There were significant relationships between leaf anatomical characteristics and antioxidant enzyme activities. The survival capacity of C. paliurus seedlings was poor when the PEG6000 concentration exceeded 15%.

Elucidating the Mechanisms Underlying Enhanced Drought Tolerance in Plants Mediated by Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi

Shen Cheng et al.

Summary: Drought stress is a significant abiotic stress that limits plant growth, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can enhance plant adaptability and tolerance to drought stress, representing an eco-friendly strategy in sustainable agricultural systems. These fungi establish symbiotic relationships with host plants, participate in water absorption, nutrient uptake, and transfer, and modulate plant physiology to mitigate drought-induced injury and enhance drought tolerance. Identifying host genes responsible for enhanced drought tolerance is crucial for effective use of AM fungi.
