Evidence for nickel mobilisation in rhizosphere soils of Ni hyperaccumulator Odontarrhena serpyllifolia

V Alvarez-Lopez et al.

Summary: Rhizosphere processes affect the uptake of elements from soil, with higher labile Ni fractions in rhizosphere compared to bulk soils. Root-derived compounds, particularly dissolved organic C, play important roles in controlling Ni availability to plants. Resupply of soluble Ni in the rhizosphere of hyperaccumulators may not be sufficient to maintain high concentrations, leading to a shift towards less stable Ni fractions.
