Soil moisture determines the recovery time of ecosystems from drought

Ying Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, global patterns of terrestrial ecosystem recovery time were identified based on remote sensed vegetation indices. The affecting factors of recovery time were analysed using a random forest regression model, and the spatial distribution of the dominant factors of recovery time was determined based on partial correlation. The results showed that the global average recovery time is approximately 3.3 months, with the longest recovery time occurring in mid-latitude drylands. Soil moisture was found to be the most important environmental factor affecting recovery time.

Microbial biomass in forest soils under altered moisture conditions: A review

Xiangyin Ni et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of elevated and reduced soil moisture on microbial biomass C (MBC) and microbial biomass N (MBN) in forest soils across dry and wet regions. It was found that the influence of altered soil moisture on MBC and MBN concentrations was greater in dry regions. The intensity of manipulation and length of experimental period were significant factors affecting the response of microbial biomass to altered moisture.

Drying and rewetting cycles increased soil carbon dioxide rather than nitrous oxide emissions: A meta-analysis

Jianhui Sang et al.

Summary: The increased frequency of extreme weather variations worldwide has led to significant changes in soil water content. This study conducted a meta-analysis to explore the responses of soil CO2 and N2O emissions to drying and rewetting cycles (DWCs) at a global scale. The results showed that DWCs increased CO2 emissions, but had no significant effect on N2O emissions. Factors such as soil water-filled pore space during wetting, soil clay content, days of drying and wetting, and frequency of DWCs played a significant role in the emissions. Biotic and abiotic factors, such as carbon substrate availability and microbial activity, were identified as the main drivers of CO2 and N2O emissions, while soil gas diffusion and oxygen availability dominated N2O emissions.

The mechanisms underpinning microbial resilience to drying and rewetting-A model analysis

Albert C. Brangari et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of soil moisture on microbial community structure and physiology using a process-based soil microbial model. The results showed that both the history of soil moisture and the severity of the dry period preceding rewetting significantly influenced the responses of microbial communities. Furthermore, the adaptation of microbial physiology and structure to changing environmental conditions played a key role in determining response patterns and CO2 emissions.
