Antimicrobial peptides cathelicidin, PMAP23, and PMAP37: Expression in the endometrium throughout the estrous cycle and at the maternal-conceptus interface during pregnancy and regulation by steroid hormones and calcitriol in pigs

Summary: The expression of cathelicidins in the endometrium of pigs changes throughout the estrous cycle and pregnancy in a stage-specific manner, and is also detected in conceptus and chorioallantoic tissues during pregnancy. Cathelicidin protein is mainly localized to specific cells in the endometrium during mid to late pregnancy, and its expression is induced by calcitriol but not affected by estradiol-17b and progesterone. These findings suggest that the cathelicidin family plays a crucial role in regulating innate immunity and protecting maternal and/or conceptus tissues for maintaining pregnancy capacity in pigs.
