Complete genome sequence of a novel secovirid infecting cassava in the Americas

Ana M. Leiva et al.

Summary: We report the complete genome sequence of a novel bipartite secovirid infecting cassava in Colombia, provisionally named cassava torrado-like virus (CsTLV). The genome analysis revealed that this virus has a typical replication block, conserved torradovirus motifs, and a rare Maf/Ham1 domain.

Phylogenetics and Evolution of Potato Virus V: Another Potyvirus that Originated in the Andes

Segundo Fuentes et al.

Summary: Potato virus V (PVV) originated in the Andes region and only a few isolates spread to other regions. PVV evolved rapidly and shares similar ecological characteristics with Potato virus Y (PVY). Through phylogenetic reconstruction and dating calculations, PVV is estimated to have appeared around 29 BCE and diversified after the potato late blight pandemic in 1853 CE.

Genome Analysis and Pathobiology of Cassava-Infecting Torradoviruses Containing a Putative Maf/HAM1 Pyrophosphatase Domain

Monica Carvajal-Yepes et al.

Summary: Next generation sequencing was used to analyze a cassava-infecting torradovirus, and a Maf/HAM1 domain was identified in its genome sequence. The virus leads to symptoms such as chlorotic leaf spots and reduced root yields, and has a narrow host range. The study also reported the targeting of the virus RNA by cassava RNA silencing defense mechanisms.

Genomic characterization of a new torradovirus from common fleabane (Erigeron annuus)

Robert Alvarez-Quinto et al.

Summary: A new virus, tentatively named fleabane yellow mosaic virus (FbYMV), was detected in common fleabane (Erigeron annuus) showing symptoms similar to those caused by viruses, such as leaf yellowing, mosaic, and mottling. The genome organization of FbYMV is comparable to that of members of the genus Torradovirus. However, the level of sequence identity between FbYMV and known Torradovirus species is below the cutoff established by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), indicating that FbYMV should be classified as a new member of the genus Torradovirus.

Sequence analysis of 43-year old samples of Plantago lanceolata show that Plantain virus X is synonymous with Actinidia virus X and is widely distributed

John Hammond et al.

Summary: This study presented the full-genome sequencing of plantain virus X (PlVX), showing its synonymity with Actinidia virus X and widespread distribution in Plantago lanceolata in the UK. New data on distribution and diversity, along with two new host records, highlight the broader range of hosts infected by PlVX. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of surveys of noncultivated species for understanding viral distribution and host range, and the value of generating sequence data for isolates retained in virus collections.
