Evidence that endosperm turgor pressure both promotes and restricts seed growth and size

Audrey Creff et al.

Summary: Using computational simulations and experiments, the authors propose a mechanical model of seed growth where endosperm pressure directly induces growth but indirectly inhibits it through force-dependent testa wall stiffening. By combining experiments with computational modelling, the researchers provide evidence that endosperm pressure plays a dual role in seed growth, both driving growth directly and inhibiting it indirectly. Their findings suggest that developmental regulation of endosperm pressure is necessary to prevent premature reduction in seed growth rate caused by force-dependent seed coat stiffening.

Evidence linking life-form to a major shift in diversification rate in Crassula

Meng Lu et al.

Summary: Crassula plants have developed different ecological strategies in response to environmental challenges, and the lability of these strategies is more common in plant groups that adapt to various habitats. This study investigates the patterns of diversification within Crassula and identifies potential links to its life-form evolution. The findings confirm a radiation of Crassula in the last 10 million years, and the increased diversification is strongly associated with a compact growth form.

Microscopical observations of crystal deposits on the epidermis of leaves of Agave potatorum

F. M. Leon-Martinez et al.

Summary: Calcium oxalate crystals were found on the leaf surface of Agave potatorum, with a styloid morphology and confirmed composition. A higher abundance of crystals was observed on the top side of the leaf compared to the bottom side. These crystals grew in bundles and reflected light. Additionally, the thicker cuticle on the bottom side had a unique structure, which could be related to the plant's adaptation to drought stress.

Methylesterification of cell-wall pectin controls the diurnal flower-opening times in rice

Mumei Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of diurnal flower-opening time in rice. It shows that rice Diurnal Flower Opening Time 1 (DFOT1) modulates pectin methylesterase (PME) activity, which affects pectin methylesterification levels and lodicule swelling, thus controlling diurnal flower-opening time. This finding is important for reducing the costs of hybrid breeding and improving the heat tolerance of flowering plants.

Desiccation tolerance in bryophytes relates to elasticity but is independent of cell wall thickness and photosynthesis

Alicia Perera-Castro et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the trade-offs among cell wall properties, desiccation tolerance, water relations, and photosynthesis in bryophytes and other poikilohydric species. The results showed that cell wall elasticity correlated strongly with desiccation tolerance, while cell wall thickness and photosynthetic capacity were not correlated. Furthermore, photosynthetic capacity in bryophytes was independent of cell wall elasticity and desiccation tolerance.

Evolutionary success in arid habitats: Morpho-anatomy of succulent leaves of Crassula species from southern Africa

Marc Fradera-Soler et al.

Summary: Succulence is commonly seen as an adaptation to drought, but it can also be observed in plants typical of mesic and even hydric environments. A study on Crassula species in southern Africa found that water content is consistent regardless of habitat, while leaf morpho-anatomical traits are linked to macroclimatic conditions. The differences in mesophyll traits in Crassula may be related to water storage and CAM performance, while leaf surface properties are more associated with water conservation and possibly water uptake through hydathodes.

Resurrection plants optimize photosynthesis despite very thick cell walls by means of chloroplast distribution

Miquel Nadal et al.

Summary: Resurrection plants have unique anatomical features such as thick cell walls and high chloroplast exposure, which help them tolerate stress without compromising photosynthetic capacity. The combination of these factors enables higher net CO2 assimilation per cell wall thickness in resurrection species compared to desiccation-sensitive plants. This mechanism is particularly successful in resurrection ferns, which show higher photosynthesis rates than their counterparts.
