Advances in the Implementation of the Exactly Energy Conserving Semi-Implicit (ECsim) Particle-in-Cell Method

Giovanni Lapenta

Summary: The energy-conserving semi-implicit (ECsim) method, developed by the author in 2017, is a particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithm for plasma simulation. It achieves energy conservation through a semi-implicit formulation without the need for a non-linear solver. The introduction of a mass matrix allows for linear expression of particle-field coupling, ensuring energy conservation to machine precision. This paper analyzes three methods for modifying the construction of the mass matrix, including sub-cycling of particle motion, a form of smoothing to reduce noise while maintaining exact energy conservation, and an approximation of the mass matrix that transforms the ECsim scheme to the implicit moment method.

Collisionless Particle Dynamics in Diamagnetic Trap

I. S. Chernoshtanov

Summary: This study investigates the collisionless motion of particles in an axisymmetric mirror machine under the condition of diamagnetic confinement, where the pressure of confined plasma equals the magnetic field pressure in the trap. The nonconservation of magnetic moment in the low magnetic field central region can lead to chaotic motion and collisionless particle loss. Particle confinement can be achieved through either adiabatic invariant conservation or fast azimuthal rotation. The criteria for particle confinement are determined and the lifetime of chaotically moving particles is estimated. The plasma confinement time in the diamagnetic trap under gas-dynamic outflow regime is also estimated.

Pushing the Frontier in the Design of Laser-Based Electron Accelerators with Groundbreaking Mesh-Refined Particle-In-Cell Simulations on Exascale-Class Supercomputers

Luca Fedeli et al.

Summary: This paper presents a mesh-refined massively parallel Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code optimized for kinetic plasma simulations on supercomputers. The code incorporates innovative strategies such as parallelization, mesh refinement, and load balancing, enabling 3D simulations of laser-matter interactions on high-performance supercomputers. The simulations overcome limitations in laser-based electron accelerators, which have potential applications in high-energy physics experiments and FLASH radiotherapy.

A particle-in-cell code comparison for ion acceleration: EPOCH, LSP, and WarpX

Joseph R. Smith et al.

Summary: There are now more Particle-in-Cell (PIC) codes being used to simulate intense laser-plasma interactions, but direct comparisons of these codes have been relatively few. This study compares three PIC codes and finds strong agreement under specific conditions, while also exploring statistical fluctuations of the outputs.
